As much as Sally liked her teacher, she had never tried going back to his classroom early before. Normally she would spend as much time playing outside as possible. In fact she wasn't even totally sure he'd be there, but she felt safer with him than anywhere else in school, and after everything that happened already she didn't want to take any more risks. She turned around and made her way upstairs, briefly wondering if someone would stop her. Students normally had no reason to go upstairs during break, but no one said anything, and soon he reached her familiar classroom door.

It was locked. Sally hesitated for a moment, but she really didn't know where else to go. So after taking a moment to work up the courage, she knocked. From inside the room, she heard sound of an office chair creaking, as if someone was getting up. But after waiting a moment she heard nothing more. She knocked again, and this time she got an answer:

"Just a minute, who's there?", called Mr. Vice's voice.

"It's Sally, can I come in?"

"You're awful early, but... Hang on, I'll get the door."

Sally waited for what seemed to her a long time, but finally Mr. Vice opened the door waved her inside, looking a little nervous. He closed the door behind them. "Well, what brings you back so early?"

"I'm sorry... I hope I'm not interrupting anything..."

"Not at all, well I mean, my lunch but if it's important... is anything wrong, Sally?"

She wasn't sure where to begin. So she started recounting the whole story of the mix-up at the nurse's office, how Elly explained what must have happened and the lunch lady fixing her uniform. It took a while. But she hoped if she just explained everything, her teacher would know what to do.

As she talked, he motioned for her to join him at his desk. He adjusted himself in his chair and just listened. When she finally finished he simply said "I'm sorry, that was an unfortunate mistake, perhaps I should have called ahead to explain it to Ben myself."

Sally was a bit disappointed that Mr. Vice didn't have a magical solution, but she did feel better after telling her story. "So can I just wait here until class starts?", she finished.

"Of course, honey, I don't know if I can be very entertaining though, I've got some papers to grade." He caught himself addressing her more informally than he normally would, and knew he was getting into dangerous territory again, but after everything she'd been through he couldn't bring himself to send her away.

If Sally noticed, she didn't mind at all, but it was a while before she spoke again. Finally she asked the question that had been bugging her. "Mr. Vice, is there something wrong with my private parts?"

At this, he couldn't conceal his surprise. "Sally, why would you ask that?"

"Because when Ben looked at them he said I should talk to a real doctor, and I don't know what that means, but you looked them too and you said you liked it..."

"Shhhh. Okay, okay." Mr. Vice said in a soothing tone. Sally was obviously upset, but this was the last thing he wanted anyone to overhear. He continued barely above a whisper. "No, Sally, there's nothing wrong with you. Ben only said that because he had you confused with the other girl. Remember what Elly told you about periods? You're too small to get them yet, and Ben could tell that when he looked at you. He was just surprised because he thought that's why you were there.

This made a lot of sense, and Sally just hadn't put the pieces together before. But still, she asked what in her mind was a perfectly reasonable question: "Do you want to look again to make sure?"

Dear lord, why must she tempt me so, thought James. But he'd been tempted before, and once again did the right thing. "No, Sally, I can't. It wouldn't be proper. And I'm sorry but I do have some work to do now. How about I get you something to read while you wait?"

Sally for some reason felt slightly disappointed he didn't want to look again, but reading sounded good, and Mr. Vice had all kinds of books in his classroom that rarely came down from the shelf. She knew he'd have something good, and he didn't disappoint. He got down a large book titled ''The Illustrated Encyclopedia'', and placed it on the desk where Sally had been seated earlier. "I think you'll find this interesting.", he said.

And she did. It seemed to have at least a page on everything imaginable, with both pictures and entertaining facts about them. She got so engrossed that it came as a complete surprise when the bell rang as she was reading about different kinds of eagles.

James pushed a stack of papers aside and looked down from his big desk. "I thought you'd like that. But the other students will be here any minute and you'll have to get out your regular workbook, so it's time to put it away. Can you manage? It's pretty heavy."

"I think so." Sally closed the encyclopedia and hefted it. It was indeed heavy, but she thought could handle it. "I remember right where it was", she said proudly. But when she got to the bookcase she quickly realized she couldn't actually reach that shelf, so she moved the nearest chair over and climbed it to reach the shelf in question.

James was just thinking this didn't look very safe and was about to suggest he better do it when she finally got the book back up on the shelf. Ironically, that's when disaster struck. He wouldn't have believed it if he hadn't seen it himself. All Sally did was turn around to climb down when that safety pin in her uniform caught on a loose nail that that he could have sworn hadn't been there before.

Sally was caught off balance and knocked over the chair with a loud clatter. James rushed to help her, and for a moment she was suspended there by her clothes, but gravity—or some equally immutable law of the universe—quickly began liberating her from them. First her top tore clear up the back, as she sank up to her chest in the oversized stretchy shorts, then in an effort to catch herself, she burst a seam in the skirt, and finally the elastic in her shorts gave way. With her weight no longer evenly supported, she started to spin and then flipped over, and narrowly avoiding landing on her head, as she tumbled to the ground, unharmed but completely nude, save for shoes and socks.

No, on second thought, James couldn't believe it even when he did see it himself. He was utterly stunned.

Sally, for her part grasped her dire situation more quickly. The rest of her class would be there any second. She had to hide, but where? There was nothing so convenient as a closet, unfortunately. But she saw one chance, and quickly to went to hide...
