== The Report ==

When I was 21, my parents and I were in a freak car accident; I was the only survivor. I remember the smell of the hospital room, the light blue hue of the ceiling lights, and the chattering of nurses. I remember being intravenously fed, unable to move, and thinking they watered me like a plant. <br />
Tubes ran into my skull; maybe that was why I was immobilized. I was told I had suffered brain damage from the accident and needed to stay motionless. I remember… that things were… different. I remember nothing but… forgetting. I had forgotten who I was. I didn’t know my name at times. Flashes of this happy boy, my mother who loved me, my father… and then… nothing.<br />
The treatment worked, and I started to remember again. I remember my past, growing up on a farm with my mother and father, far away from the city that I had to call home after that. A conservative upbringing that shaped me—now a farm boy lost in the big city.<br />

I met Paula when I was 22, a stunning redhead I thought was too good for me. We fell in love. We had a beautiful baby girl named Rachel, a little redheaded copy of her mother. <br />
I had more and more issues as our daughter grew. Paula and I drifted further apart. It was then that I noticed I was very different. That I was sexually deviant. I started to fight the feeling, but it changed my behavior toward my wife and daughter. <br />

My problem became her problem. We separated shortly after that. She took an apartment nearby, and we agreed on a fifty-fifty schedule for Rachel, who was eight years old at the time. My feelings continued to change and get more intense. In the end, it even became a problem for me when other men talked about their daughters. I became more reclusive and lost contact with our friends shortly after. But Paula trusted me enough to have Rachel stay with me. She knew I would not harm my angel even though my feelings for her were… strange.<br />
My love for Paula has not changed, and I feel pain whenever I suspect she sees other men. Rachel doesn't talk about it; she knows what I am and doesn't want to hurt me. <br />
When Rachel handed me the results of her health check this morning, I silently read it. Her eyes begged me to understand what was happening to her, knowing it would hurt me. She left for her room, silently as if it was her fault how I thought about her. I know it is me, that I am the sexual deviant in a world that doesn't accept people like me, a danger to children.<br />

Rachel and I sit on the couch and snuggle like we usually do. We watch a movie that makes me uncomfortable with some scenes of naked children. But it doesn't affect her unwavering interest in the romantic comedy. I feel her body against mine, her small hand grabbing me when the story gets ‘full romance,’ as she calls it. I hope she will find real romance somewhere in the future, as I found it twelve years ago. <br />
When the two people, who will end up together in the end, make a stupid mistake, I feel her giggles vibrate as she leans into me. I smell her strawberry-scented body lotion and kiss her on her head. <br />
Commercials interrupt the movie, and I take the opportunity to get us a drink. A beer may make the movie more palatable. <br />
I return to the living room—a cold iced tea for Rachel and my beer. A news broadcast replaces the commercials—another terrorist attack on a government health center. Due to the early time of the broadcast, the bodies are blurred, but it is clear that many children and their parents were present at the time of the attack. Rachel is very upset; this could have happened when she was with her mother at the local health center for her checkup. <br />

Rachel tells me she is scared and doesn't understand why they do this. I see her tears as she gives in to her helplessness. I sit next to her, afraid to move when she clutches me and tries to find security in her world. I’m happy when the movie continues and replaces her dark thoughts. She finally relaxes. <br />

I know what the terrorists want, but not why they chose to do it in such a brutal way. I even think they are partially right. But I could never take a life. I could not even think about hurting anyone. <br />
So far, the terrorists were untraceable. They used suicide bombers, and when identified, they always had been a normal ‘standup’ citizen. Just a few days ago, I had received a leaflet promoting a meeting, a folded-in-half letter in the mailbox now stuck under a magnet on the fridge. Some proof it made people talk about their points that society and the entire system as it is now should be changed. <br />
‘Feeling different?’ It says, and in smaller print, it tells how the terrorist attacks are bad but a well-needed shake at the ‘rotten foundations’ of our society. I am invited to a meeting to discuss with like-minded people. <br />
How would they know if I was like-minded? I had placed it next to a drawing Rachel had made for me over a year ago. A child’s interpretation of us getting together again as a family, how her ideal family looked like. It is a disturbing picture to me, but removing it would give the wrong signal to Rachel. <br />

I have difficulty accepting the message on the crumpled paper lying on the table. I press my lips together, and I feel my fingernails dig into the palm of my hand. Carefully, I straighten the paper, trying to smooth the creases I created, rubbing it along the table edge. <br />
I walk toward the window for… something to happen, something different than this. <br />
Eighty-two levels below me, cars and busses as multicolored roaches scurry about their business along the grey pavement. So many people in this city live their normal, uncompromised lives. Why am I so different? Why do I feel so different? Why do I feel so different about my daughter than anyone I know? <br />

The paper is irreparably damaged. I should ask them for a new one. Maybe Paula received the same. I walk toward the phone, calling a memorized number I dread. <br />
“Paula…Davies,” I hear. For a moment, the hesitation gives me shivers. Would she sometimes still use my name? The idea gives me hope. <br />
“Hi, it’s me.”<br />
“Oh! Hi Ben, everything fine with Rachel?”<br />
“Yes, of course, eh… did you get the test results?”<br />
“I did. Do you understand you need to be there for her? This time, at least?”<br />
“I… I always am.”<br />
“Are you going to throw her a party to make up for the last time, or do you want me to do that? She is with you for another week. I don’t think it should wait that long.”<br />
“A party? What kind of party?” I try. <br />
“Are you serious? Look, I understand and accept you are sexually… different. And that your feelings for her are not normal. But you need to set that aside for her. You didn’t want to do that for me, but she deserves more support. And with this result, you know how to make her happy.”<br />
I keep silent. The idea of giving her a befitting party worries me. <br />
“Forget it,” Paula barks, “I will do it if you can just bring her here. And this time! You need to be there! And you get her some presents!”<br />

Paula doesn’t understand how this makes me feel, how I want to do very different things with Rachel. <br />
“Do you still have that evaluation?” I tell the cold mouthpiece. <br />
“You tore it up, huh? Yes, I have it. I will enshrine it, golden edges, cast in plasticlear so nothing can happen to it.”<br />
“… Thanks,” I mumble. Unable to speak myself, I hear her breathing. The other side of the line, after a click, goes dead. <br />
I stand there, the telephone still in my hand, a constant tone from its speaker.<br />

The paper still doesn’t look any better. My attempts to smooth it made it tear. Like my heart felt when reading it.<br />

The paper has two, almost calligraphic, signatures from the doctors who examined her. Rachel had also received a letter with a more detailed explanation and her updated Sexual Preferences Report that would help guide her through her sexual life. <br />
A small card had accompanied the letters. Part of the glue is still on the paper from where she removed it. I know it will be tucked away in Rachel’s wallet—a credit card-sized version of her Class Four status. Another hint she was very interested in doing things outside the house. <br />
My breathing falters. I never got used to Rachel getting her Class Three. And with a Class Four, she could do anything she wanted. I never asked her what she did, and she never told me. To me, she was still my little, innocent Rachel. <br />

It had always been known that our race had a built-in desire to procreate. Though very rarely, like me, some had a ‘defect’ and had strong feelings of jealousy.<br />
Sex, in our world, was taught at an early age, and most things considered taboo in the post-war generations were now considered normal. The development of children was closely monitored so they could make the correct decisions in their sexual lives. The classification system was easy and pretty much upheld. It had been in place for decades and ensured the safety of young people. The type 2 mentioned on her card was nothing more than an indication she could have full intercourse with adult men without her parent’s consent. And with her being eleven, going on twelve, I had severe problems with that. <br />
Paula’s theory was that I must have been like this because of where I grew up, a small farming community. She made it sound like I had been part of some weird cult where traditional values from before the wars were still upheld. <br />
The new traditions relied on children’s birth, healthy, cheerful children, and promiscuity became…virtuous. Though it started a hundred years ago and is far from needed these days, it has become a cornerstone of a happy society. It had several nice side effects; rape and abuse are almost extinct. Others were fewer visits to a shrink. The changes remained and slowly changed into the world we live in now. <br />

== Mall-versations ==

“My party is tomorrow,” Rachel says, reading a message from her mother. <br />
I hold her hand as we cross to the other side of the road to visit the large shopping mall in the city center. Rachel pulls me along as I admire the huge entrance. <br />
“You have been here before?” I ask.<br />
“Yes, come on!”<br />
“Why the rush?”<br />
Rachel inhales deeply, “Just… come?”<br />
I follow her with some difficulty, pushing people aside to avoid losing her in the crowd. After my tenth ‘sorry,’ I see her stop a few yards before me. <br />
“Where to first? Do you want something nice to wear for the party?” I try.<br />
“For my party? Clothes? I am not going to wear any clothes.”<br />
Her comment hit me like I walked into a concrete wall with nails sticking out. I feel out of sync; my brain detached from my body. <br />
“If you don’t want to buy me that sort of thing, I can ask Mom. But Mila got some toys from her dad. What else do you want to give me?”<br />
“Does it have to be such a thing? Why not something like those construction toys?”<br />
Rachel pouts her lips, “It is for my four ‘thing,’ not my birthday.”<br />
“I… I understand.”<br />

The stylistic phallus-shaped sign and the shop’s name, Phallustopia, leave little to the imagination. <br />
“So they sell fake… dicks?” I ask.<br />
Rachel’s laughter echoes against the ceiling. I blush when a guy twice my age looks at us and winks. Rachel smiles when she sees him nod approvingly. The idea this guy has about me with my daughter is a stab in my heart. Or the idea of him wanting to do something with Rachel. <br />
Rachel checks my reaction, and I see her frown as she raises her shoulders to the guy as if she wants to tell him, ‘Sorry, I cannot go with you now as I have this guy here like a ball and chain keeping me from taking your offer of…’<br />
I try to smile; sometimes, it makes me happy even if I am not. But it feels so artificial this time. I always hate it when they look at my daughter; I know they want her to do things with them. <br />
Rachel turns to me, and I see she has attached her Class Four card to her shirt. My legs feel like walking through twenty inches of wet mud as I enter the shop.<br />

I am relieved the shop is not too crowded. Rachel knows where to go. Her first interest is the girl’s section, where most toys resemble cuddly animals. A big-eyed caterpillar looks at me from behind its cellophane box. It’s some vibrator, and the cartoon girl printed on the box pushes it between her spread legs as she smiles ecstatically. <br />
A sign hanging from the ceiling informs me of the importance of toys. It tells me that, on average, a girl aged eight to sixteen has 2.3 sexual encounters a day. And providing toys for pleasure lowers these numbers and the problems involved. Maybe this was not such a wrong gift. <br />

“It is so funny. Can you imagine this…” she stops mid-sentence, “I think I will. It works with our machine at home.”<br />
To help her decide quickly, I take a boxed version. The skin of my face feels hot, “Medium?”<br />
“Can I try it first?”<br />
“You just did!”<br />
Rachel ignores me and continues her search. <br />

“Can I help you two?” A petite young girl with a curvaceous figure has sneaked up on me. Black hair and a gold-glitter accented eyeliner that matches her brown eyes make her look a bit alien. A good-looking one. Her blue store outfit stretches so tight over her small breasts that I can see her nipples. She seems too young to work in a shop, especially one like this. <br />
“We… we are just browsing… For a present,” I say.<br />
“Totally Awe, for yourself? Or for someone special?”<br />
Rachel taps her badge, “It’s for me, my fourth.” <br />
The girl claps her hands, “Oh, Wow, why didn’t you say so? Discounts! And you know what they say. For a good fourth, something to titillate, something to stimulate, something to penetrate. So… you can pick three things, and you only pay two. Are you already a member?”<br />
“No,” I say.<br />
“Yes,” Rachel says.<br />
The girl in blue frowns. Rachel holds out her communicator to be scanned. <br />
“I am Claudia. I can be your master of the pickle patch and help you decide,” she tells us as she waves like a tour guide with her hand at the many phalluses. She pushes something on a wrist device. A neatly placed shoulder ocularium projects information onto her arm. I see a list of items and purchase dates starting when Paula and Rachel moved out of our place. <br />
“Rachel, so nice to see you here again. And Paula? You are not Paula…Or?” Her eyebrows move like two competing brain halves independently control them.<br />
“No, I am her father. Paula is her mother,” I say.<br />
I don’t know what bothers me more: the dates of the purchases or Paula and Rachel having a loyalty card. <br />
Claudia looks at the box tucked under my arm, “I know this sounds like some sales pitch, but I have that one myself. And you have to try this with a real machine, not with this thing,” she points where the dildo Rachel had pushed on the appendage where it still kept pulsing a random pattern. “And definitely not here in the middle of the aisle, though I have seen people do it.”<br />
Her laughter makes other people look in our direction.<br />

Rachel hesitates, and my heart stopped at the idea of her contemplating the first offer. <br />

“Like funny, funny, or funny nice?” Claudia smiles.<br />

Claudia shows us a pair of regular panties placed on a girl-sized mannequin. She touches the fabric, “It works with contracting fibers. Rachel shuffles her feet, “You don’t need to wait here for me.” <br />
“I…I will go and check some more,” I tell her.<br />
“Why don’t you join her? I am sure you will know what your daughter loves best,” Claudia says. I answer her wink with a thin smile.<br />
I hear Rachel sigh, “I can do this myself. Dad, why don’t you… check some other things in the shop.” <br />
I frown; it is hardly something that I want to do. But I understand she is giving me a way out. I don’t know if it was for herself or me. Rachel pulls the hem of her shirt. <br />
“Oh, I will go and check some… over there…” I point at a random location in the shop. <br />
Claudia shrugs and takes Rachel deeper into the shop. I walk in the direction where I pointed. I have no idea how much time Rachel needs to ‘fit’ it. The idea itself is hard enough for me. I feel shame when I look at Claudia, who has returned to her desk and smiles at me. I feel bad when I smile back. <br />
I expect Rachel to call me when she is finished. I leave the shop and sit on a bench. <br />

I am getting more nervous; perhaps she has forgotten her communicator, but I remember her using it. Through the window, I see Claudia conversing with another store clerk. <br />
“Hi,” I say. <br />
A smiling Claudia pushes three boxes toward me, “This is her choice.” <br />
“Oh, fine. She is somewhere in the shop?” I look around, but I don’t see her. <br />
“She is still in the back. I will gift wrap these; they will be ready in a few minutes.”<br />
I pay for them, an expensive gift, but I want her to be happy even if it is not the type of happiness I believe is good for her. <br />
I try to find Rachel. I feel as if all eyes in the shop are burning on my back as I walk through aisles of girl toys. In the back, I find the ‘fitting’ room, and on a chair, Rachel is staring into the distance. <br />
“Are they good?” I ask, but I don’t feel like hearing the answer.<br />
“I can’t walk anymore,” she smiles briefly. She puffs her cheeks and looks at her hands. I guess she remembers how I feel about all this. I steady her as she stands up and keep her from falling back. <br />
“Everything fine?” Claudia asks. I have to admit she is good at sneaking up on me.<br />
“Rubber legs,” Rachel says.<br />
“You were in there for some time. I can imagine. So I understand you enjoyed it?” Claudia grabs her by the shoulder, “How many?”<br />
“Just those three? Right?” I try to pull Rachel with me. <br />
“Seven, I think?” Rachel looks at me as if I should know the answer. <br />
“That is wonderful. I love it when… people enjoy the fitting room.”<br />
Rachel blushes, “I… I am not supposed to, I know. It just happened.”<br />
“Don’t be like that, and I think it is great that you tested them out… extensively. Which one did you like best?” <br />
“The bubble thing was wonderful, but that wave thing? That was fabulous.”<br />
“Rippler, right? It is also my favorite of those two.”<br />
“I love how it…” Rachel’s voice trails off, and I feel her shoulder muscle slack under my hand. <br />

Rachel looks happily at Claudia, something that bothers me. I don’t know what Rachel’s preferences are. Something I should have asked her like any normal father would. Maybe she was into girls. Or both… <br />
I swallow, “Can you help us to something? Rachel, maybe the model you have at… I mean, the one Mom has?”<br />
Claudia’s ocularium returns to her shoulder and projects Rachel’s data. “Sorry, we no longer have those, but that one was pretty good. Much better than the one in the fitting room.”<br />
She zooms in on the model, a sex machine with a ‘discontinued’ text. Paula always wanted one, and I always had a reason not to buy it. Maybe if I had let her, she would still be with me. Letting Rachel have one to use at my place would maybe keep her from doing other things. I dreaded to find her with some boy, or guy, in my house.<br />
“Follow me,” Claudia says. <br />

“Your one, or your mom’s, is replaced with this model. But a completely different beast,” Claudia lets her hand rest on a machine with a price tag that I could hardly afford on my salary. <br />
“Voice operated, full three-D movement and target acquisition, two penetrators can be fitted simultaneously, with full control over your dildos of choice and their patterns—lubrication with a spray if needed, cleaning, and storage for six of your toys inside its housing. Storage can be added for four more toys. Her eyes dart from me to Rachel, awaiting a response as I stand there open-mouthed. <br />
“This is a bit expensive; another time, perhaps,” Rachel says. Her hand runs over the sleek body panels. I see her shiver and swallow. She looks at a cheaper model. It just looks wrong compared to the other. A thing that is more like a self-built contraption with levers and pulleys. <br />
Watching Rachel’s disappointment kills me. I want her to be happy, and this would be a good investment to put myself more at ease. <br />
“We… we will take it,” I say. I will survive the month if I pay some of the bills later. <br />
“But Dad!”<br />
“It’s for your fourth, and I want to give it to you.”<br />
Claudia’s eyes sparkle, and her grin pulls funny-looking dimples in her cheeks, “How are your legs, Rachel? I would love to do the setup with you, courtesy of the Phallustopia.”<br />
“We can’t do that ourselves?” I ask. <br />
“I don’t know how to do that, Dad. Mom’s was also done here. It’s like preferences, and they know what is possible.”<br />
The vision in my head of Paula in this shop, having it fit to her taste, bothered me. Something I never asked her about, and I feel… stupid. Did they also do this for Rachel back then? <br />
Claudia squints at me, “Sir, for young girls, the shop is obligated to input her profile. Even though she is class four and can handle the girth of an adult male, she cannot be penetrated too deep. You know that.”<br />
As Claudia disappears to the back, Rachel walks to a door opposite the ‘fitting rooms.’ Confirming my fear. She must have been here to set up her mother’s machine with a Class Three profile. Claudia arrives with a large box with a convenient carry handle. <br />

I watch her unpack the machine. It fits in a plastic box the size of my mom’s sewing machine. <br />

“I will be outside,” I say. <br />
I see a frown return to Claudia’s face, but she continues the installation of pink-colored plastic. <br />

I sit like Cerberus outside the door. A three-headed dog that would bite anyone’s privates to mush who dares enter. The door is soundproof, but I hear muffled screams as Rachel, I guess… orgasms. I don’t know how it makes me feel. I feel shame when I notice my dick hardens. She is my daughter, and I can’t feel these things; I shouldn’t. <br />
