“Mom, we’re home!” Skyler shouted as she came in through the front door of the house.

“Well guys, are you ready? Are you excited? Miharu’s flight will be here in 2 hours.”

The two girls smiled and cheered in excitement. They had been looking forward to hosting their new friend from Japan ever since their mom had proposed the idea when hearing about the exchange program at school last year. Jessica made a face in return. “You don’t realize how annoying YOU are sometimes Sky!” She whispered huffily.

“Now, now, you two, I am sure Miharu is going to like all of us. We studied up on Japanese culture together, right? I am sure if we show her that we are making our best effort, she will be eager to try out new stuff with us as well, that’s what you are hoping for, right guys?”

The two sisters exchanged knowing and expectant smiles, wordlessly communicating their true hopes for the next few weeks. They were eager to welcome their new friend into the thrilling lifestyle they enjoyed with their mother and friends. 

“Before you came home, I picked up the sushi and put it in the fridge for dinner. How about you guys go get the sign we made and we’ll get ready to leave for the airport?”

“Also great weather Miharu, it is perfect all year round here.” Kristen said from the front seat. 

“Yeah, tomorrow we are gonna go to the beach, it's gonna be awesome!” Jessica said excitedly, unable to keep from going a mile a minute despite her mother’s admonition.

“Just wait Jessica…Miharu I know you might be tired, so don’t let it worry you. We will only go if you feel OK.”

“No, I want to go!” Miharu said enthusiastically before pausing, expression a bit concerned. “But…I did not bring a swimsuit. We don’t go to beach much in Tokyo….” She said, acknowledging the massive megalopolis in which she lived. Miharu might be from the next state over, Saitama, but even that was basically just an overflow suburb of the largest city on earth. 

“Don’t worry about that Miharu, we have everything ready here.” Kristen said, unable to hide a smile, not yet ready to tell her the full details about their plans for the next day. In the rear-view mirror she could see her two daughters were unable to suppress their knowing smiles either, but thankfully they were able to keep quiet for once. 

“Miharu, I knew you were good at English, but you are like, REALLY, good.” Skyler said, changing the subject. “I think you are like better than some Americans, at least some of the dumb guys at my school. How did you learn so much?”
