The tradition of a daughter's goodnight lick meets with her friend's approval.


Time stands still in the midlands and if you don’t know where you are going, it’s easy to get lost. If you get lost and your auto loses a wheel, you are in a bit of pickle. That’s exactly what happened to me. If it wasn’t for a kind stranger in a dilapidated old caravan that happened to pass by, I probably would have died from the elements. The roads here were so far from a village or town, nobody traveled them and were awfully rutted. It was one of those ruts that wrenched a wheel from my poor old banger.

His name was Henry and he was a merry old chap who just turned seventy and lived alone, in a remote location that was very… very far from civilization. He took me back to his one room cottage and let me sleep over, then cooked me a very hearty breakfast composed of several ingredients I couldn’t quite identify; but were quite tasty. He didn’t have telephone or electric and when I asked him to drive me to the nearest town, he told me, “You may be fecked. There isn’t enough petrol in the old coach to get us out of sight. You’re welcome to stay until the post carrier makes a round on Wednesday or old Marty happens by first.”

Old Marty happened by first and brought Henry a can of petrol and drove me to nearest village, which was not so near. I think I grew calluses on my bum from all the bouncing we did during the drive and I got a nice knot on my head from a particularly deep trench.
