"Come on Tash you're going to be late to school!" A slightly deepened boys voice calls out to the person running next to him.
"Well you're hardly getting there any quicker Tom!"
Tom and Tash, like most things they do, are running to school together. And like most days this term, they're late! They would have got the bus, but they missed that. They would have eaten breakfast before leaving the house, but they missed that too! Now they're trying to scoff down cold bacon rolls as they attempt to make it through the doors before Principle Rash takes his post in front of them. They've only been back at school for ten days this term, and eight of them they've been late! It would be alright if they could find a genuine excuse to give, but the truth really is far from a good excuse!
Suddenly Tash stops running. She throws her school bag on the floor and begins searching through it.
"Tash what's up?" Her brother asks, more curiously than anything.
"Did you bring any money for lunch?" They left the house in such a hurry, they forgot that as well!
"Well that's ...a..." He trails off as he notices something just past on the ground, just a few feet beyond Tash's position. It has a slight shine to it. It's small, but it's enough to catch the boys eye. Like a trance, he feels like he has to take a closer look. When he does, he sees an old ring made of a silver strip, encased either side by a band of gold. At first glance he things it might be an eternity ring, or a wedding ring. But when turns it, just a little, between his fingers, he notices and inscription that reads اسأل وأنه يجب أن أقول اسمي. نعم. Of course, he's completely unable to read it.
"Tash take a look at this!" He hands it over, carefully as not to drop it. She marvels at how remarkably clean it is; how long has it been sitting there on the ground!
"It looks like a wedding ring! Someone may have lost it. Shouldn't we take it to the police?"
"People don't just lose a wedding ring next to the drains! They must have been trying to get rid of it or something." He takes it back into his own hands, and begins to slide it onto his finger. Remarkably, it seems to fit him perfectly! "That's weird!"
"What is?"
"If this belongs to an adult shouldn't it be too big to fit me?"
Neither of them notice a shadow fade over Tash's eyes before she answers. "Erm, yeah I guess it should be!"
"We should keep hold of it, look after it. If we see anyone looking for it on our way home from school we can give it back then right?"
"Yeah, course we can! But right now shouldn't we get to school?!"
Quickly, the two of them take off again. They round the corner and through the gates at 8.35. To their dismay, the door patrol is there waiting for them.
"Thomas and Natasha Morse," he speaks with a sharp tone and a sly grin on his face, "you're late, again!!"
They stop immediately in front of the man. He's tall, lean, and dressed in a finely fitted three piece suit.
"Sir..." Tash begins, but is cut off very suddenly.
"You know the rules, it's detention for both of you. After school, today!"
"But sir it's Friday!" Tash continues to protest.
"And that, my dear, is exactly the point. You use my time in the mornings, and I'll use yours at the weekend." Principle Rash smiles, a cold, thin smile.
"Principle Rash, can't you let us off just this once? Please?!" Tom clasps is hand together as he pleads for his life. There's a pause; the twins presume he's considering their fate. What they don't realize, again, is a momentary look come over their oppressor.
"Ok." After a few seconds silence, that felt more like minutes, he relents. " but just this once! And I'm goIng to tell your mother about this!"
"Great. Mums gonna ground us for life!" Tom mutters under his breath.
"Now, off to Registration both of you! You have your Development to discuss." The principle turns on the spot and, without taking a single foot out of line, walks into the school building and out of sight.
What do they do?
