You work at a small private school with less than a hundred pupils, aged between ten and sixteen, spread over five classes; your specialty is English literature and you are currently working with a class of ten and eleven year olds.

"Right," you say once the register is done; "we are reading Romeo and Juliet and I thought that we could act out some of the scenes. This causes much whispering and giggling which you ignore. "Act one, scene five," you say, and the whispers and giggles get louder as they see the scene you have chosen.

"So who wants to play Juliet," you ask; unsurprisingly no one volunteers. "How about Romeo?" No one wants that part either, so you pick Martin, an eleven-year-old with a shock of red hair. He blushes deeply as he comes up to the front, wondering which of his classmates he's going to have to kiss.

You scan around the class; ten boys and nine girls, and you see that Simone is more interested in talking to her friend Susan than paying attention. When you call her name, she looks up, startled. Reluctantly, she carries her book the front of the class stands beside Martin.

Although Martin is nearly a year older, they are both roughly the same height. Simone is still carrying some of her baby fat, but her tits are just beginning to push the front of her shirt out; she’s not the prettiest girl in the class, but there is something about her that attracts you. She stands there with her arms folded, shuffling her feet, scowling and looking defiantly around at everyone except the boy standing next to her.

“Remember that the Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare wrote about but not much older than the two of you. In fact, compared to children in the seventeenth century you are probably more worldly wise.” They know all this, but you think it’s worth reminding them.

“Take Juliet’s hand,” you say, and the two children slowly turn to face each other and grasp each other’s hands as if they were being introduced. “Romeo; you’re in love with this girl and you’ve never touched her before.”

They try again and this time they make a better effort. “Your hand is like a holy place that my hand is unworthy to visit. If you’re offended by the touch of my hand, my two lips are standing here like blushing pilgrims, ready to make things better with a kiss.” Romeo says, reading from the book. Juliet responds with her lines but when she gets to “holding one palm against another is like a kiss,” she bursts out into giggles.

The first kiss is just pressing lips together and they break off quickly and going to the discussion about guilt and sin. “Sin from my lips,” Romeo says. “You encourage crime with your sweetness. Give me your sin back. “This time the kiss looks more promising, and when they break apart the class bursts out into spontaneous applause and a few whistles from the back.

“Well done,” you say; “I think you need a lot more practice; you’ve got gym last period this afternoon. Come and rehearse with me instead; I’ll let Mr Hammond know.”
