The six-year-old looks like an easy target, but before you can make your move he spots his mother. “Never mind,” you think and head towards the arcade; there’s usually a twinkie or two hanging around in there. They keep the lights down low, but it’s full of machines with flashing lights, bells and silly little tunes. You’re disappointed to see that there are only two young lads playing on one of the machines; taking it in turns to challenge each other.
Your friend Dmitry is in charge and you find him sitting in the back room, watching the boys through the one-way glass. He barely acknowledges you as you walk in and help yourself to a coffee, before standing behind him. “Fancy them do you,” you ask.
You can see him grin in the reflection from the glass. “They’re going to run out of money soon; maybe we could think of a way they could earn some more,” he says, licking his lips.
Two boys look as if they might be brothers; about eight or nine years old, with sandy coloured hair. They are both wearing jeans and T-shirts, with trainers on their feet. One of them throws his arms up in the air and we can hear him shout his victory; the other one punches him, but not really hard enough to hurt. They step away from machine and look around. Dmitry slips off his chair, goes to the door of the office and calls out; “hey boys; you want more tokens?”
Dmitry is in his thirties, but with his slim build and dark good looks he could easily pass for ten years younger. As always he is stylishly dressed in designer jeans and a T-shirt that shows off his muscles. The boys come over and stand by the door. “We haven’t got any money left Mister.”
Dmitry shrugs. “That’s a shame; what are you going to do now,” he says. “Anyway; aren’t you supposed to be in school?”
They shrug and shuffle their feet. “It’s one of them teacher training days init,” one of them says.
“We can’t go home ‘cos there’s no one there,” the other one chips in.
“My friend and I were just having a coffee; why don’t you come in and join us; I’ve got soda in the fridge if you want,” Dmitry says, backing away from the door and ushering them in.
“Are you sure it’s all right?” Dmitry tells them that he’s in charge so it’s all right if he says it is. The boys come in and look around. The office is actually a series of rooms that runs across the back of the arcade. To one side, there’s a storeroom, with access to the loading area at the back; the storeroom is mostly full of broken machines and a couple of shelves of spare parts. The office has a frosted glass window looking out over the back of the mall with a desk jammed up against the wall underneath it. There’s a shelf along the wall under the viewing window where Dmitry was sitting on his swivelling office chair and next to that is a big old safe where he keeps the tokens with a small fridge sitting on top of it. The only other furniture is an old couch set against the wall next to the door leading through to the bathroom.
The boys sit down on the couch and Dmitry gives them each a can of soda. You ask them their names and they tell you; “John and Alan.” They are brothers, and John is the elder by less than a year, so they tell me a lot of people mistakenly assume they are twins. They live with their mother and don’t remember their father, who ran out while their mother was pregnant with Alan; she works in a local factory, barely making enough money to keep their heads above water.
Dmitry is sitting in his chair, and I go over and sit down between the boys; the couch isn’t that big, so our legs are pressed together. You ask them where they got the money from to play on the machines, and they both blush and try to convince us that it’s their pocket money. Dmitry goes over to his desk and takes out a camera. “I know someone who is looking for catalogue models; if you boys are interested I could take a few snaps and see if they could use you. It’s easy work and it pays quite well,” he says.
You get up and take his place on the office chair, and there’s a fair amount of giggling while he takes a few snaps of the boys sitting on the couch. He kneels down in front of them and shows them the pictures on the camera screen. “I think we need better light,” he says. He turns the overhead strip off and a couple of spotlights on, which are already aimed at the couch, then he goes back and starts snapping again; the boys just sit there.
It’s easy to tell that Dmitri has done this before, as he gets the boys to start posing and then to take their shirts off. “You’ve seen those catalogues; they often have kids stripped down to their underwear,” he says. He keeps snapping away and telling them to move this way and that; he gets them to hug and they are well into it when he asks them to try a kiss. They are both down to their boxers by now and you can see that John is aroused. Kissing seems as if it might be a step too far until he says that while he is sure that the pictures he has will interest the agency, they are more likely to be impressed if they take things a bit further.
He looks at you for confirmation. “That’s right,” you say; then, as if it just occurred to you; “It could be ages before we hear back from them; I think that if you boys are interested, that we could pay you something upfront; but only if you cooperate fully.”
