"Just because we have to live our lives in a vault does not mean that we need to abandon all that which made America great in the first place. Without democracy, are we even American anymore? We might as well have given up and joined the Chinese if we were giving up on that basic building block of American culture. We'll need to formalize everything, but I think we can put together a form of city council . . . or vault council, I suppose. There would need to be elections . . . and we'd need judges. Well, we can work out all the details later. We'll have to schedule a meeting on that. In the meantime, I guess I'll oversee the transition."
You look at the ladies staring back at you in disbelief. Your mom is smiling brightly at you, but both Doctor Romero and Doctor Charbonneau seem disappointed. Chief Killian is actually shaking her head. You start to second guess your decision, but it seems that more than half of the department heads are okay with your decision, so you decide to move on.
You clear your throat and continue. "Okay, next there was the adaptation of marital relationships. What are your thoughts on the subject?"
"Given that you are the only male in the vault; I think we need to completely abandon the artificial practice of marriage," says Doctor Romero. "Even if we tried to keep the practice, you could not possibly be faithful to your wife. You need to impregnate most, if not all of us to try to keep some measure of genetic diversity even with my modified FEV."
"Now see here!" says your mother, "just because you're some kind of hedonistic deviant is no reason why the rest of us should give up on morality and decency. Tay can provide sperm as a doner for those who want it, and still have a monogamous relationship with a woman when he gets older."
"That is unrealistic in the extreme," says Chief Runningdeer. "I'm fine with you teaching your children to be monogamous, but it should be up to each person whether they want to be monogamous, polygamous, or whatever they want to be in their relationships. You aren't the morality police. You are the security chief. It's not your place to legislate morality."
The ladies argue over the issue for a time, and you come to a decision. "Excuse me ladies," you say, somehow silencing the room once more. "I've come to a decision."
