The whole family has a quiet dinner together like they do every night. The three kids can barely look at each other throughout the meal, but thankfully the adults seem to be too focused on their various conversations to notice.
Lucia finishes first, and asks "May I be excused, papa?" He looks up from his conversation with her grandfather and nods. Lucia cleans up her dishes and takes them to the kitchen.
Returning, she pokes Filip in the back. He turns and looks at her. She clears her throat and flicks her eyes in the direction of their room, then to Silvia, then wanders back into the kitchen and starts cleaning the dishes from the day's meals.
Filip seems to take the hint. He also asks if he can be excused, then nudges Silvia who does the same. The pair takes their dishes into the kitchen and hands them to Lucia.
"We'll talk later tonight. Just make sure to act natural or the grown-ups will know we're up to something!" Lucia says to Filip and Silvia.
"Yeah, yeah. Don't worry about us, mother-hen." Filip scoffs.
Lucia sticks her tongue out at Filip who does the same. Filip races off to who-knows-where with little Silvia desperately trying to keep up with the boy.
"Those two are joined at the hip, I swear..." Lucia mutters under her breath as she goes back to her dish cleaning chore.
She finally finishes cleaning and putting away the dishes. About to head back to her room, Lucia bumps into her grandma on the way out of the kitchen.
"Lucia, dear, my bones are telling me it's going to be cold tonight. Can you take some blankets out to the stables and make sure the animals don't get too chilly?" she asks the girl.
"Of course, nana. Don't you worry, I'm on it!" Lucia hugs her granny and head to the front door to do as she asked. 'I guess the talk will have to wait...' she thinks to herself.
She grabs her shawl hanging up by the door and wraps it around herself, then picks up the family's one good hand held lantern and fumbles with the flint and steel trying to light it.
Once she gets it lit, she heads out into the brisk evening, thinking her granny was probably right as usual about the night going to be a cold one.
