"Why don't you come have a shower at my place first" you suggest, then we can discuss which offer I'll take.

She turns from her phone and looks at you like you made some kind of obscene suggestion, which is kind of funny considering her menu. "You implyin' that I'm dirty or somethin'?" She practically yells at you.

You look her over from her messy hair and her dirty face, she glares at you as your gaze travels over her grubby jacket and threadbare leggings. Finally, your eyes land on her beat-up sneakers, now that you see them up close you wonder how they are holding together. "I'm not implying anything of the sort, I'm simply saying that a shower would make you feel a lot better," you say, diplomatically. There's something about this girl that intrigues you and if she is indeed a runaway then you can't just leave her alone.

She stares at you for a good few moments without a word, clearly, she's suspicious. Her eyes look you up and down quickly before she shrugs and turns back to her phone. "I'll throw in a fry-up or any other food you want," you say not wanting to give up.

She takes a deep breath and turns back to you, "you just don't give up do you?" Before you get a chance to answer she continues, "let me charge up my phone too and you got a deal." You eagerly agree and with a sigh, she drops her feet to the floor and stands up, "no funny business, you hear?" You cross your heart in a show of promise and she leans over to pick up a small backpack you failed to notice earlier. "Let's go then."

"It's just a five-minute walk," you say as you walk off down the path towards the gate. She doesn't reply but you can hear her sneakers on the gravel behind you.

"So what's your name?" You ask trying to make conversation.

"Amelia and I'm 12 almost 13 to answer your next question," she smirks up at you as you turn to face her.

You introduce yourself as you pass through the heavy gate, rather than head straight home you decide to make a quick stop at the grocery store to pick up some supplies, she rejects any of your offers to buy her anything so you finish up and lead her to your apartment. Nobody seems to take any notice of you as you both walk up the stairs to your door.

Once you open the door you step in and hold the door open for her, she nods at you and walks inside. Your place isn't very big and the first thing she does is walk into your living room and finds a socket, she slips off her backpack and pulls her charger out before pulling the plug to your lamp and plugs her phone in. She doesn't even look at you as she prowls around your home, looking at everything, she opens the bedroom door and pokes her head in, she gives you a glance as she pushes open the bathroom door.

"Have you decided what you want to eat?" You ask as she finishes up her inspection.

"I'll let you choose," she says, "I'll go take a shower then."

"I'll start cooking," you say as the bathroom door slams shut. The snick of the lock seems to reverberate around your apartment and you're standing alone.
