Ryan wasn't sure what the facilities would be like at the lake itself, so he again reminded the kids to use the restroom if needed. And this time Sally admitted she had to pee and went into the restroom. Ryan and Devin waited patiently, but she came back out almost immediately.

"Uhh, I can hold it."

"What's wrong?", asked her father.

"It stinks in there!"

"Pit toilet, huh? One of the chief hazards of the wilderness." Ryan laughed at at his own joke. "But on the plus side, you can always go behind a bush."

Sally wasn't very experienced with hiking or anything—it wasn't something the family did regularly—so she was a little nervous about that prospect as well, and insisted she was fine. But in any case, they finally set off on their walk. It was about 10am and the day was shaping up to be a warm one, but there was a light breeze and some shade along the trail to balance this. It started off level, than began working its way over the ridge. It wasn't unreasonably steep though, and based on the map, the second half should be downhill again.

Everyone was was in a pretty good mood as they hiked up the trail. But before too long Sally started to get uncomfortable. She didn't want to admit it, but it was obvious from how she moved. Ryan called a halt.

"Sally, I think you really need to pee. Seriously just go behind a bush. We'll stand guard and make sure no one is coming."

She started to pretest. "No, I can wait until...", but she trailed off. Standing still was making it worse and she knew he was right.

"You don't look like you can wait. Just find a private spot and take care of it. We'll be right here."

"Okay. Watch this for me." She took off her backpack and set it on the trail.

Sally was still nervous about doing this. She didn't want her dad or brother to see, and what if someone came from the other direction? But Ryan was right, it couldn't wait, so she headed off the trail into some low trees and bushes, perhaps further than necessary; she wanted to make sure she had privacy. The next problem was how to do the deed itself. The last thing she wanted was to get her skirt wet, so she decided to take that off and hang it on a low branch. She considered taking her shoes off as well, but she really couldn't wait any longer, so she just crouched bottomless in a wide stance and did her business.

What a relief! And her shoes remained clean too. That wasn't so bad after all, she thought. But her positive feelings didn't last long, because when she got up to retrieve her skirt it was nowhere to be seen. But it had to be! She only had it off for about a minute total. She frantically searched the area, and finally she spotted it a good 10 yards from where it had been, and it was moving! The bottomless girl ran after it, modesty forgotten for the moment, and caught up with it just in time to see a chubby little rodent drag it down a hole. She almost tried to reach in after it, but the animal screeched at her and she thought better of it.

She had to get it back somehow, but she didn't know what to do, so despite her embarrassment she ran back to the trail, calling for Ryan and Devin.

"A gopher stole my skirt!"

The guys weren't sure they had heard right. "Say what?", asked Ryan.

But sure enough, there came Sally running out of the brush, blushing and covering herself.

"A gopher stole my skirt.", she repeated.

Devin tried to be the voice of reason. "Well first of all, I don't think there are any gophers around here. And second, why are you even embarrassed? We've both seen you naked."

"That's different, I'm not supposed to be naked here! You have to help me get it back! Come on!"

Ryan laughed. Only with Sally would this happen. But the two followed followed Sally's pink butt back into the woods, Devin stopping only to grab her backpack, lest that get lost too. Sally led them back to where he skirt had vanished and pointed out the hole. It didn't occur to her to wonder why neither of the guys were surprised she didn't have panties either.

"I'd say that's probably a groundhog burrow.", said Ryan.

"Fine, a groundhog stole my skirt. How do we get it back?", asked Sally impatiently.

"I don't know if we can, honey. If it's really down there. Are you sure that's what happened?"

"I'm sure. I saw it." Sally was about ready to cry. The hike was ruined, and it felt like her fault. Not that she could have known about skirt-stealing rodents, but she obviously couldn't finish the hike like this. They'd have to go back, and how was she going to explain this to her mother?

But Devin came to her rescue, offering her his shirt. "Here, you can tie this around you as a skirt."

She wrapped the shirt around her waist. It didn't work great. At first she tried tying the sleeves in front, but that left a gap where she needed it most, and looked positively indecent. Tying it in back would be almost as bad, but Devin had a suggestion. "Why do you try tying it on the side. That almost looks like a style."

She turned it around, and it did almost look like a style. Not a style most people would let a 10-year-old wear, but she was more or less covered.

"Well, that's too bad about your skirt, but you did get a chance, to pee, right?", asked Ryan.

"Umm, yeah, it stole my skirt while I was going pee."

"Alright then, are you okay to keep going? I think that will do fine as a replacement skirt."

"Yeah, I guess so." Sally was still pretty embarrassed by the whole incident, but she'd been having fun up to that point and didn't want to be a wet blanket.

"That's my little trooper. Let's go."

Ordinarily of course, Ryan would have considered this a reason to turn around too. Sally really didn't look proper at all. But considering their objective, it seemed silly to worry too much about lost clothing. So they made their way back to the trail, donned their backpacks and set off again.

Sally was usually good at forgetting she wasn't decent, but this shirt/skirt was rather distracting. It left almost her whole left leg uncovered, and feeling the air on one side was a constant reminder. She was especially worried about how much it showed in back, where she couldn't see. She adjusted it to where it just barely covered to privates to front, to get as much cloth in back as possible. This was drafty to say the least. Every time she took a step it let a breeze in.

But other than that, it was nice walk. It never did get too steep and after about an hour they were nearing what seemed to be the high point.

Sally was in the back of the pack, and every time Devin looked it seemed she had adjusted skirt to be even worse, he could now see the beginning of the mound between her legs. He was just considering whether to say something when he also noticed they had company. A man in a cowboy hat was coming up from behind and gaining on them fairly quickly, which Devin mentioned to the others.

Almost unconsciously, Sally adjusted her "skirt" again, so she was completely covered in back.

And within a minute or two, he had reached them. "Hullo! Nice day, isn't it?"

The speaker was an older man, though his exact age was difficult to determine. His face looked like leather from years spent in the sun, but he had a spring in his step, and probably only Devin could have outpaced him.

Devin gave him a quick "Hey" and Ryan turned to greet him. "It sure is. Say, we're new around here. How much farther?"

He confirmed what Ryan had been thinking. "Oh, we're just about half way there, and it'll be downhill after that ridge."

Sally said nothing, but the man wasn't about to let her off without exchanging pleasantries.

"How about you, little lady? Enjoying your walk today?"

As was often the case when she got flustered she forgot the specifics of her situation and tuned to face him. She was now completely uncovered in front.

"Oh my! Couldn't wait to get your kit off, huh? Well you're going in the right direction."

Sally really didn't understand any part of this comment, so she just responded to the previous one. "Umm, yeah it's a nice trail. I'm Sally, by the way."

Either just to be polite, or perhaps for more voyeuristic purposes, the man came down on one knee to bring himself closer to Sally's eye level. "Name's Nathan", he said, tipping his hat. "Pleased to meet you."

"Uhh, hi. Nice to meet you too."

"The pleasure is all mine. Well, perhaps we'll see each other again at the basin. So long folks, enjoy your walk." And with that, Nathan straightened and continued on up the path at an impressive rate.

Sally and her family started moving again as well, and it wasn't until she had taken a few steps that she realized what just happened. Her skirt was completely wrong now... she had shown that guy everything! Her father must have noticed too, but he seemed remarkably unconcerned about his.

"That guy, my skirt, shirt, he saw..."

"Don't worry about it honey, he didn't mind, did he? Nathan seemed like a nice man."

Sally wasn't entirely convinced. She impulsively flipped the garment around. Now her butt crack was fully visible, but she had given up trying to keep it "just right" and this was clearly the least worst option. Devin was again tempted to say something, but he decided it wasn't really worth the effort. If all went well she'd be completely naked within an hour.

And it wasn't long before Sally got her first clue about what was to come. As they reached the top of the ridge, a lake came into view. It was larger than either of the guys had imagined, and of course Sally wasn't expecting it at all. "Wow, there's a lake!", she said. From that vantage point, they could just barely make out what appeared to be people here and there on the shores, and a couple small boats of some kind, but for the most part the lake looked fresh and pristine.

"That looks like a great place to swim, doesn't it? I wish we brought out bathing suits."

"I wouldn't worry about that too much." said Ryan, not so mysteriously.

But Sally still didn't catch on.

Being downhill, the rest of the hike went quickly. Ryan was conscious of the fact that they would have to hike back up again, but it was, he estimated, only a little steeper than the way up had been, so it should be fine after a rest at the lake. This side of the ridge was more heavily wooded, and once they headed down into the trees it became much harder to see the lake. So it came as a pleasant surprise when, about half an hour later, the trail opened up into a straight path down to the water's edge, giving them their first look at it up close. They had arrived.

And what did they see?
