You dream you are a boy called Tom. Your name is Tom Riddle. It's summer, you are in a meadow with your friend, you are playing a game with a bat and a ball. You are wearing shorts and a t-shirt. A pretty ordinary day for you. You look up and see a woman hanging from the roof. The rope is tight around her throat, and her neck is bent at an angle that is not right. Despite all of this she is looking right at you, and she begins to speak:
"Let me come with you," she says.
"No," you say, wanting to back away from this woman who has no right to be in the land of the living. You try to move but you cannot.
“Please," she says, and you feel bad for saying no because she is afraid and she wants to be with you and you don't want to hurt her feelings.
"No." You say, and she replies:
"I'll be your friend," and you feel guilty for not wanting her there.
"No," you say, and she says back:
”I'll make you a better friend."
"No," you say, and she begins to unravel:
"I'll make you a better friend, a better friend, a better friend, a better friend.”
Your dead mother opens her mouth and all the horror of your soul pours out in a torrent.
