Marcie is cute, there is no better word to describe the eight-year-old. Her long fair hair is tied in bunches and her bright blue eyes over a snub nose and a gap-toothed smile arrest your attention.


John is also cute. The same fair hair and blue eyes, but he has a slightly sulky look and his trainers scuff the floor as he walks into your consulting room.

"I hear you have been having problems at home," you say as an opening to start them talking, but they just sit there, radiating resentment.
 
"You promised me that you would talk to the doctor," Mother says sharply. Both kids wince but keep studying their shoes.
 
"I wonder if it would work better if I talked to the children on their own," you say.
 
Mother takes a moment to consider. "Okay, I guess. I'll be right outside if you need me."
