A taxi pull up and makes the decision for you. "Where to guv," he says.
You get into the back. "Where does a single man go for a good time in this town," you say.
He turns round and looks at you. "Well, there's a few clubs, but you don't look the club type. Maybe a smaller, more private place?"
"Sounds good."
"Don't take this wrong, but which way do you swing? Boys, girls, men, ladies?"
"Girls." You reach forward with some money in your hand. "Err, Young girls for preference."
He takes off, doing a quick 'U' turn and heading out of the town centre. "This place is a little above the regular," he says, looking at you in his mirror.
It takes you a moment. "Oh! Right. That should be no problem," you say.
He nods, apparently satisfied and turns off the road through a gate. It's more track than road and you have to hold on as the taxi lurches over the potholes. Eventually, it comes to a stop in front of a rather grand house, albeit one that has seen better times. Some childrens play equipment is scattered around but there's no sign of any children.
The driver drops you at the bottom of a flight of steps and you make your way up and ring the bell. They clearly knew you were coming as the door flies oped straight away. At first you don't see anyone, but then you look down to see a small girl in a princess outfit. "Hello Princess," you say.
"Hewwo mister," she says and runs off. You stand there looking round. You are in a hall with a flight of stairs in front and several doors leading off. The decor is, like the outside, rather shabby but surprisingly clean. A woman comes out of the door on the left. She is quite old and severely dressed. "Can I help you," she asks.
You don't know how to react, but are saved when a teenage girl follows her out. "This gentleman is a guest," she says, gently steering the old woman back to where she came from. "How did you find us," she asks.
"A taxi. I asked about somewhere a single man might go."
"Ah! Most of our guests come in the evening. The girls are at school this time of day, she says with a smile." She leads you into a kitchen and sits you down at a scrubbed pine table. "Tea?"
"Yes, thank you," you say, watching her as she bustles about with kettles and teapots. "Are there a lot of girls here," you ask.
"Oh yes, quite a few. We take destitute girls from all over," she says. "Entertaining gentlemen is how we pay for it all."
"Do the girls mind the, err, entertaining?"
She stops, with the teapot poised. "They don't all have to. But a lot of them come from homes where they had to look after their fathers and brothers, so they gt used to it. In fact they soon start to miss it."
