Gary has been best friend with Chad since elementary school. Until entering high school, Gary was a scrawny, weak kid. He's never been terribly bright, and got held back a year in the second grade. Since then he has been squeaking by on C's and D's. Over the summer between 8th and 9th grade Gary had a tremendous growth spurt. His new height and mass meant that he gained individual popularity, instead of just being popular by association with Chad. This wen to his head, and he wanted more. He started taking steroids and working out regularly. He carefully hid his steroid use from his best friend, knowing that Chad would disapprove. The steroids made Gary a behemoth, but at the expense of his penis size. Gary overcompensates for his small penis by being cocky and aggressive in public. Chad's influence is the only thing that stopped him from becoming a full-fledged bully.

Gary fell head over heals for Dana when he met her, but he never got the nerve to do anything about it. When Chad started dating her, he gave her up for lost. At a party about two years ago, shortly after Chad and Dana started dating, Dana came onto him while Chad was elsewhere. Gary was torn, but relented to her advances. Since then Dana has used sex and putdowns to keep Gary in her back pocket. She belittles him regularly, though rarely in public. Gary takes everything Dana dishes out.

When Dana broke up with Chad for Gary, he was devastated. He never wanted any of this. This only feed his feeling of impotence, leading to even more rage and bravado. Without Chad as a guiding influence, Gary is becoming the cliche dumb, jock, bully that seems to be the path that the universe has set for him.
