"Well, they're already in the vault and there are a lot more that are just here at the vault door," you say. "I love my family, but they are in a much better situation than all of these people. If I can help them get into a safer position more quickly, I'd like to do what I can."
"Oh oui?" says Doctor Charbonneau. "You are a very special boy indeed. So brave and selfless, no? I am envious of your future girlfriends."
"Now, now," says Doctor Romero with a laugh, "I saw him first."
"Oh no need to fight," replies Doctor Charbonneau. "I am open to the possibility of a ménage à trois. Wouldn't that be nice, n'est-ce pas?"
You feel your face flush. You've had adult women playfully flirt with you before, but what these two women are doing is on a different level entirely. They almost seem serious.
"Now you've embarrassed the boy," says Doctor Romero with a chuckle. "Tay, why don't you go into the other room, and get things rolling. Let's see if we can get things moving a little more quickly for these folks."
"Yes ma'am," you reply emphatically. You spend the next half hour watching ladies and girls getting naked before the first development. Your considering whether or not to masturbate when Doctor Charbonneau's voice cracks over the intercom.
*Attention, attention Vault 69 residents. This is Doctor Charbonneau. I have an update on the situation. First, and most importantly we are in no immediate danger. It appears that a high yield fusion bomb hit directly between Vault 68 and 69. The vaults were designed to take these kind of forces, and both vaults appear to be intact. This is not without difficulties, however. The common areas between the vaults appears to have collapse, and is leaking radiation. The radiation could be dealt with by sealing off what remains of the common area . . . but that means that the vaults would be completely isolated from one another. There are two faint rays of hope, however, so do not despair.
*First: You will be able to talk to your families one last time. The transmission lines between the vaults are currently intact. Sealing the the common areas will need to happen relatively soon to protect us from radiation; but when we do, it will sever these transmission lines. We are currently scheduling for everyone to have time after decontamination and orientation to speak with their families in Vault 68. We will have to sever communications by six o'clock am tomorrow morning, however.
*Second: We are not doomed to die out due to only one sex occupying each vault. Due to some computer errors in the resident records, a number of individuals were assigned to the wrong vault in the case of both vaults. We will be able to have another generation; and in two hundred years our descendant will reclaim the Earth.
*I wish the news were better, mes amies, but at least it is not hopeless. Prepare yourselves to say goodbye. We will do the best we can to help you all through this troubling time. I will give you more information as it becomes available.*
It is a huge blow, and a huge relief at the same time. You will never get to see your father again. That is hard. But he is alive and presumably unharmed as are you and the rest of your family. You will survive. You will move on. You wonder how many other men and boys had their records confused for girls. Any way you cut it there will be plenty of girls to share between you all. Actually from what you are to understand, to avoid problems you will all probably have to have a harem full of women.
Genetic diversity is a problem in a confined community like a vault. When you read the literature about Vault 69 it mentioned the “50/500” rule, which suggested that a minimum population size of 50 was necessary to combat inbreeding and a minimum of 500 individuals was needed to reduce genetic drift. This is the reason vaults are designed to start with a population of 1000. The designers figured double the threshold would be a safe buffer. With the Vault 68 and 69 design, it was changed to twice this . . . until now. Now with the vaults separated, you would have to have kids with lots of different women to combat inbreeding . . . though genetic drift might be unavoidable. It's only for two hundred years though. In terms of number of generations it shouldn't be too bad. With just one other male, you can avoid brother-sister and parent-child pairings which according to the literature were the most dangerous . . . though reading it got you excited for some reason.
You spend the rest of the night processing the vault residents. fourteen hours or so after you started, everyone is finally through. It's your turn. Oh yeah! You get to be naked in a room with Doctor Romero, who has been flirting with you all day, for fifteen minutes. You wonder: Should you try anything?
Should you try anything??
