Long ago a warlord had 99 rings commissioned for his most loyal assassins. They were forged through dark, forbidden magic so vile that none would be willing to look upon any who wore them. In time the warlord became a king as all of his enemies fell to unseen assassins. The king did not sit easily on his throne. He began to doubt his retainers, the 99 assassins that even he could not see. Thus the king commissioned a final ring. A ring to strip the assassins of their invisibility and control them. Before the ring was fully forged it was stolen by the Church. The Church viewed all magic as evil but the horrors committed to forge the assassin’s rings were of another level entirely. The Church had been searching for a way to put an end to the king and his assassins and this new ring would be perfect for the task. While the king’s ring could not control the other it could reveal the assassins to everyone within sight. And thus an inquisition was launched, the king was cast down, the assassins hunted, and the rings reclaimed. Well, most of the rings. The assassins proved a difficult quarry. As the decades and then centuries passed the inquisition died down. The Church had recovered 76 rings and locked them in a deep vault. They considered the rest lost to the mists of time. Those 23 rings were truly lost but what is lost may someday be found…
