This is intended to be both a literary exercise and experiment of sorts. The premise is actually rather simple: write a story with nothing but dialog. In this way it would be similar to early radio plays. I have designed templates to help make the process of writing these stories easier, and more visually appealing, as well as for removing the need to indicate the speaker in the text. It would be very pleasurable if other people wanted to try their hand at writing one of these dialog stories. I encourage others to join me in this literary exercise.
Rules
- Use templates for your characters based on those that I have already made.
- I have made the templates as user friendly as I can. Use the
|says
parameter for speech, the|thinks
parameter for thought and the|mech
parameter for mechanical speech like a tv, radio, phone call, etc. - To make it easier on yourself try to use names for your characters that no one has used yet. That way you can use their name as the name of the template.
- Do NOT use another person's template as your character without getting permission first. For instance if you want to use my Brian template as a character in your story, ask my permission first.
- Any square (not rectangular) image should work in the template, but it is best for a head shot. There are a lot of easy, free resources to crop pictures. Crop it to a 1:1 aspect ratio around the face and you should get a good picture for the template.
- I have made the templates as user friendly as I can. Use the
- Only speech and thought should be used. No narrators, no exposition. Sounds can be added in the speech section by surrounding it with asterisks
*clang*
, but this should NOT be used for actions. Actions taken can only be inferred from the dialog. - Only characters that are present in the scene in some form should be used. It's okay to use Grandma if she's on the phone, or the Devil if he's talking in a character's ear, or the News Guy if the TV is on; but we aren't in Miami, so why are we hearing what Uncle Don is saying to the lady on his vacation?
- Have fun. This is a requirement. If you aren't having fun, what are you doing writing the story?
Character Permissions
Add any templates below that you give permission for others to use:
Stories
List your stories that use this format below. Follow the layout that I have used if you please.
