A full week went by without any other unfortunate mishaps befalling Sally, not for lack of trying mind you. Last Tuesday she had fallen asleep on the couch wearing only a towel after getting cleaned up from an exhausting hike collecting trash from some local trails. And on Wednesday she had accidentally worn one of her mom's tank tops and couldn't understand why she was having such a hard time keeping the straps on her shoulders as the loose garment flapped around her slim torso like a flag. But the weekend was when her luck finally ran out.

It was Sunday morning and Sally was home alone and carefree. Dad had accidentally woke her up really early when he snuck into her room for a kiss before he left to go fishing with some work friends, so Sally had already been lounging about the house for some time when her mom got up to make breakfast. Devin had gone over to a friend's house for a sleepover the night before, so they had the place to themselves. But after breakfast Mom had the idea to go thrift shopping, to go digging through racks and piles of clothes at weird little flea markets all over the county. That didn't interest Sally in the least; she just wanted a nice relaxing day all to herself.

All of Mom's insisting led nowhere, so she left her daughter home alone and made sure she would call if there were any problems. That was nearly an hour ago and Sally was feeling great. She had no plans and no responsibilities, her entire day a blank canvas of possibilities, and it was only 9 o'clock! She was thinking about walking to the park, or reading a book on the front step, and maybe going to the store later to buy some chips.

She had just put on her favorite sundress, as light and airy as a feather, since it was supposed to get hot today. Wearing that, Sally felt ready for anything. She felt so confident that she decided to try some baking. She had made cookies with her mom plenty of times, but how proud would mom be if she came home to see a plate of beautifully frosted vanilla cupcakes!

Sally collected ingredients and started pouring things together. When a puff of flour was ejected from her bowl and up into the air she had the foresight to protect her dress. She did so by slipping out of it and placing it far out of harm's way. She bet her mom would have chided her for flouncing around in the kitchen in nothing but her banana panties (so named as they were yellow) but Sally thought it was a much less risky proposition than putting a flimsy apron over top of her clothes. And with no one else at home to tell her otherwise, she felt confident in her choice.

Sally's decision felt like an especially good one after things started to go wrong. She kept breaking egg yolks and managed to get bits of shell in the batter. She plugged mom's mixer in when it was still set to high and sent goopy ingredients in all sorts of directions, including onto her body. She scraped what she could back into the bowl and then scooped her questionable mixture into a cupcake pan, even though she couldn't find any paper cups for it. Then she tried to make icing but her measurements were wrong and she put in twice as much butter as she needed, which made more of a sweetened butter than a buttercream. Finally, after getting fixated on mixing in more sugar and taste testing her spatula, her cupcakes started to burn in the oven!

After an hour of fussing about in the kitchen there was a big mess and not much to show for it. Sally wasn't dejected though. She had a few cupcakes that might be okay and she could always try to redo the icing, but she promised herself to clean it all up before mom got home.

Ignoring the disaster for now, she proceeded to the cabinet for a congratulatory fruit snack. But when she went to a drawer for some scissors to open the packet, that's when she noticed her real mistake; there were streaks of batter all over mom's papers, including a stack of letters that mommy must have been about to mail.

Sally pushed the papers clear of the calamity on the counter then wiped off the envelopes as best she could. She knew they were from her mom as "Ava Sorenson" was on all of them. They were definitely stained from the batter, messy streaks of white that turned some of the paper translucent once scraped away. And there were already stamps on them so these were all ready to go. She wondered if she would get in trouble when mom came home to find that Sally had ruined all the hard work that was put into these. But maybe she wouldn't get in trouble... if she mailed the letters herself!

There was a mailbox a couple blocks away. If Sally just dropped the envelopes in there then the letters would (hopefully) still get where they were going and she could get brownie points for doing a nice thing instead of screwing something up!

It was the perfect plan. Without hesitation, Sally rushed to the door with the letters in hand, stepped into her flip flops, and hurried out into the world. The only thing that she didn't account for was her dress, or more accurately her lack thereof.

It was still early in the day, and although the sun was not yet scorching, it was certainly warm outside. The morning rays kissed Sally's body and she relished it, looking up into the blue sky with a smile on her face as she strode confidently down the sidewalk.

"Good morning Sally!" Mr. Pullman shouted from across the street as he worked on his lawn. "Is, uh, everything alright over there?"

"Yup! I'm just delivering some letters for my mom!" Sally replied, holding the small stack of envelopes high above her head and pointing to them. "But thanks for asking! Have a nice day!" she waved joyfully. Mr. Pullman just shook his head.

Sally turned at the end of the street and kept up her brisk stroll, enjoying her walk but not wanting to spend too much time on an unexpected chore. On a busier road now, she waved at the few cars that drove past, since all of the drivers seemed to be looking at her. On the next block, a father and son were in their driveway washing a shiny red convertible.

"Morning! Nice car!" noted Sally as she strode by.

"Nice outfit," the boy replied. He had to be a few years older than her, and had cute messy hair. She smiled back at him, tickled that a cute boy would say something like that to her.

"Thanks!" Sally, feeling flirty, did a little twirl to show off her sundress as she went by. But she still hadn't realized that she had forgotten to put it back on. She was walking down the street wearing nothing but a pair of yellow panties. Her arms lifted slightly as she twirled and she gave that boy a very good look at her.

"Matthew, don't stare," scolded his father. Sally tucked her hair behind her ear and looked back with a cheeky grin at the boy over her shoulder as she continued her walk.

Further down the block, Sally crossed paths with an old woman walking with a cane. The woman scowled bitterly as Sally grew closer. Sally just smiled and said good morning.

"What are you smiling about?" the woman growled.

"Nothing. I'm just going to the mailbox," she replied, holding up the letters again.

"I don't care what you're doing with your box!" cried the old woman, squinting with anger. "Get out of here you little hussy!"

Sally tried to give the cranky old lady plenty of room, but the old woman swung her cane at her butt as she walked by. Sally hopped and yelped and looked down at her bum where the lady hit her. There was a mark across her panties where the tip of the cane had dragged across her backside. Sally rubbed her butt and was about to ask what was wrong when she discovered something; where was her dress?!

She stopped, taking stock of what state she was in. Her dress was nowhere to be found, her worn yellow underwear with pale orange trim the one article that covered her in any way. The only other thing that adorned her torso were small streaks of eggy batter that had splattered across her chest earlier. She covered her mouth in horror and found icing slathered around her lips and down her chin.

Suddenly Sally was stranded several blocks away from her house, parading around in her panties looking less than innocent with an angry old woman shaking a cane at her. Sally held the envelopes up over her chest and ran away from the old woman, only putting herself further away from her house.

Other things also dawned on her as she ran. Did Mr. Pullman see her like this? Had she really twirled around in her panties in front of that boy?! And with that mess on her face! How many cars had passed her?! Maybe this is why she had gotten a honk! Even with all of these thoughts, she still couldn't recall when along her journey she would have taken off her dress. She was certain she would have put it on before going outside!

With that cranky old lady far behind her, Sally slowed to a stop. She was pretty sure the mailbox was just around the corner now. She had come this far. Part of her still wanted to finish what she started. But she thought she could hear kids shouting nearby, and strolling through the middle of a busy neighborhood in nothing but her panties meant that the rest of her wanted to run for cover as fast as she could! What did Sally do?
