"Jane, turn the TV off for a minute, we need to talk about the children," you say.
"This is nearly finished. I think I know what you want to talk about. I'll see you in your study in ten minutes."
Your study is a very masculine room. There's a big desk with a swivel chair at an angle across one corner, and two comfortable leather armchairs on either side of the fireplace. There's a picture of the young Queen over the fireplace on bookshelves line the rest of the walls with a drinks cabinet built into one section.
You're pouring yourself a brandy when Jane comes in and offer her one. She declines the brandy but accepts a glass of sherry. You both sit down and take a sip from your drinks.
"So what do you think they get up to when they're on their own upstairs all the time," you ask.
Jane shrugs. "A few days ago, I would have said they were just playing, but the other day I saw Andrew kissing his sister and I thought then that brothers shouldn't be kissing their sisters like that."
"I know I'm not around much, but I do keep my eyes open," you say. "If you ask me, those two are fucking like rabbits every chance they get. He's probably fucking that friend of theirs, Susan as well. Or if he isn't, it will be one of the few boys in the village who hasn't."
"You, you really think so?" Jane finishes her sherry and gets up to get herself a refill. "I did try and warn Janet, but I don't think he took any notice. So what you think we should do about it?"
"I'm not sure what we can do. We could send them away to school, and I really don't want to do that. I had a really bad time at boarding school and I wouldn't want to put Andrew through that. I don't know what girl's schools are like, but I bet they're not all that much different."
You both sit for a while staring at the fire. "To be honest," you say. "I really don't think… Fuck it! There's not much we can do except the obvious - get Jane on the pill as soon as she reaches puberty. Oh! Maybe we should buy Andrew a box of condoms in case he is sowing his oats in more fertile ground."
