Djinn Abilities

A djinni (jinn, genie) is one of the three races created by Allah. Humans are made of earth, angels are made of air, and djinn are made of fire; no reference was ever made that Allah created a race out of water. Djinn do not live in the mortal world. Like the fey, they have their own plane of existence that inhabits a shared space with the mortal realm. This realm is called Djinnestan. Djinn have free will like humans, as opposed to angels and devils who purportedly do not (though they feel that they do). Djinn are inherently magical beings from a strongly magical realm. Magic is to djinn as technology is to humanity, and vice-versa. Technology is as strange to your average djinni as magic is to your average human.

  • Innate Magic: Djinn use magic innately and routinely. Magic is their way to live and thrive. If a djinn were somehow separated from its magic it would be like a human that had all of their possessions taken away and their hands removed.
    • Training and/or practice are required to become skilled; but no training is necessary to perform average feats of magic.
    • Djinn do not "cast spells", they directly manipulate magical energy. Djinn do not require incantations, magic circles or odd assortments of objects to perform magic.
    • Unlike witches, the djinn needs to know how the magic is going to act on the world around them to affect changes. Witches need only know what, djinn need to know what and how.
  • Magic: Magic is very versatile. A djinn's magic is only limited by their knowledge of the metaphysical universe. Much like it takes a knowledgeable engineer to make a complicated machine, it takes a knowledgeable djinni to create complicated magic.
  • Magic Items: Pretty much any item that a djinni owns will be magical. Djinn society has an equal level of convenience to human society, but with a magical basis rather than a technological one.
  • Imprisoned Djinn: For a time it was common practice for spell casters (particularly faith magi) to imprison djinn in magical objects. Contrary to popular lore, the most common prison was a ring, not a lamp . . . but any item can hold a djinni slave.
    • Djinn appear in an eruption of fire when summoned, not smoke.
    • Most djinn resent their imprisonment, and attempt to corrupt their master's desires.
    • Djinn are just as limited in granting their master's requests as they are in creating their own magic.
    • The strongest djinn slaves are the most knowledgeable, but they are also the most dangerous.
    • Rarely a djinn slave is broken, and takes on a slave mentality. Those rare djinni they actually live to serve, and cannot properly function without a master.
