You came to the beach to be seen. You guess you might as well be seen. You stand up from under the giant retriever and wave, "Hi! Is this your dog?" Your voice feels high and tight, but you try to make everything seem nonchalant, like standing naked in front of a pair of high-school boys is something you do every day.

The one without the baseball cap says "Yeah," loud enough to be heard, then the two start talking more quietly to one another.

When the dog sees them, he bolts away from you, jumping up at the speaker first, then almost as excitedly at the one with the baseball cap Then he drops back down and begins running around all three of you in a giant circle, yipping happily.

You crouch down and grab your beach bag out of the sand as the boys approach. You consider holding it across your crotch to give yourself some cover, but consciously stop yourself from doing so and let it hang to your side from hour off hand.

Both of the boys are leering openly as the approach you. You catch the last few words of their conversation: The first hisses at baseball cap boy, "Dude, don't be gross, she's like 10 years old."

Baseball cap answers "'If there is grass on the field,' manno, 'play ball!'"

"Yeah, but there isn't any grass, dude."

"You aren't looking hard enough, manno. Peach fuzz. Gol-den peach fuzz."

You are not sure what they are talking about, but they cannot take their eyes off of you. It makes your face feel hot, but it also makes you feel special.

When they finally get close enough, the one without the baseball cap says, "Hi. I'm Thomas. This is JayJay, " he says pointing to the other boy, "And that's Brutus," he says waving at the dog.

"Hi," you say again. "I'm Kiki."

Thomas smiles. JayJay's express seems more wolfish. Then JayJay says, "Hey Kiki. Were just walking Brutus. Do you want to walk with us? We'd love the company."

Thomas wheels on JayJay as his eyes bug slightly, but he says nothing.

You answer...

"I'd love to!"

"Umm...I don't really want to. Good luck though."

"Ummm...I was actually just going to go for a swim. Do you want to come with?"
