Sally and her brother trekked down the street together, making their way to the other side of town under the steady sun, not a lick of cloud in the sky. With mid summer approaching, Devin had lined up some yard work as an entrepreneurial little summer job. It didn't pay a lot, but it wasn't too difficult, and he could make his own hours. He had been looking to buy some new VR games and controllers for his computer which Sally was a little interested in herself. That was the only reason she didn't complain too much when their mom had forced her into tagging along to help out her brother.

Devin was less okay with it than Sally was but he wasn't allowed to decide. The only other option their mom presented was for Sally to go with Ava to a flea market the next town over where Ava was helping a friend run a booth. She was merely trying to help her daughter get into less trouble, which implied that Sally needed a chaperone, an idea her daughter didn't take kindly to. Sally also didn't like the idea of spending the whole day at a boring flea market with dusty old clothes, so she opted for hard labor with her brother instead.

The only thing Devin was thankful for was an extra pair of hands to lug everything across town. Dad had helped drive him around once before, but every other time he had to make two trips from house to house to bring everything he needed; a lawnmower and a wheelbarrow full of varied yard implements. But even if Devin wanted to ask for a ride, Ryan had been picking up extra shifts lately, which was the reason why Sally couldn't stay home. At the very least his sister would save him a trip, pushing the lawnmower while he handled the wheelbarrow, but he was okay with ordering her to do other things as well since her added labor happened to be free.

With how angry the sun seemed to be today, the brother and sister duo were already feeling the heat despite being dressed for the weather. Devin had donned loosely fitted jean shorts and a white wife beater. His sister stood out a lot more, with a thin, sleeveless, neon green top, and bright yellow shorts that clung tightly to her backside and strangled her small thighs. The shorts were as thin as her top, with an unseemly seam that ran right down the middle, straight underneath her from the back of the waist to the front. There was no doubt they were cheaply made, and Sally was on the verge of outgrowing them, but that was also why she had picked them; she didn't mind if they got a little beat up while working.

By the time the siblings arrived at their destination they were already getting sweaty. Devin let the old lady whose house it was know that they were about to get to work then promptly stripped off his top, feeding it through a belt loop on his shorts to holster it. He clearly had no intention of wearing it while working, only to cover up during their walk.

Sally glared with annoyance at his exposed, sporty, masculine physique. Although still quite lanky and boyish to any woman, to a 10 year old girl just noticing sexual things Devin's lean bit of muscle and understated abdominals were both stirring and unsettling. But since it was her brother, Sally was mostly focused on the inequity of the situation.

"Hmph. That's not fair."

Devin grabbed his water bottle from the wheelbarrow and took a swig. "What's not fair?" His sister pulled on the hem of her shirt illustratively.

"It's not fair that you can do that and I can't."

"Well I never said you couldn't," Devin teased.

"But I'm a girl," pouted Sally. "Girls aren't allowed to do that, not the same way boys can."

Devin shrugged before putting his bottle back. "So? Like nobody has ever broken a rule before. You make it sound like the clothing police are going to put you in jail." His words are spoken in the impish and underhanded sort of way that older siblings do to effortlessly push around their younger siblings. Devin was certainly not above that. "People get hot and they take their tops off. It's no big deal."

Devin then grabbed their lawnmower and pushed it to the backyard. Sally followed, mulling over his argument. "But... I mean, I'm not going to do that," she clarified.

"Yeah, whatever. I'm just saying." Devin parked the bagged mower behind the house then turned to his sister with a huff, already bored with this. "Listen, you do whatever you want. I don't really care."

"I can?" Sally asks in minor astonishment, as if just granted permission.

Devin shrugged again, his disinterest growing, and looked over the old gas mower dad helped him buy to start his business. "It's a free country. It's not like you have boobs anyway. That's what people tend to get all fussed about." He turned to her again. "Now listen, you wanted to try mowing, right?" Sally nods. "Then you can do the backyard. If it doesn't look terrible when you're done then maybe you can do the front too." Devin started the loud and powerful mower for his sister then walked away, shouting, "I'm going to trim the bushes out front. Grab me if you need something."

Thoughts churning in her head, Sally arduously maneuvered the mower into place to start working on the back yard. This grass wasn't too bad, but it did need some love. Sally pushed the unruly mower down the length of the yard then struggled to turn it around. It only took two passes of struggling before she decided that turning wasn't really her thing. Tilting the mower was scary while it was running and she had to push down really hard to do it. She didn't know much of anything about clutches or brakes and didn't want to mess anything up; it was 'on' and that's how she'd leave it.

Instead she decided to pull the mower back to the 'starting' side of the yard then wiggle and shimmy it into place to push it for the next line. Not her best idea, and it took longer, but she felt it was easier. She also recalled her dad saying once that a good mowing job came down to clean straight lines, and Sally was determined to make every line look as clean and straight as possible. In her head, pulling the mower back so she could start from the same side every time should help accomplish that, but that was more her justifying her questionable choices than anything.

Sally pushed and pulled the lawnmower about the yard getting hotter and hotter as she went, the previous conversation still rattling in her head. Heat tends to make people rash and irritable, and Sally was no exception. She only managed another couple of passes before she gave in. Her brother's curt comments and the relentless summer sun were the only things she needed to convince herself to take off her shirt.

Looking around timidly, Sally slowly peeled her top up her body. She knew full well that she shouldn't, but the rebellious notion her brother had planted rang loud in her head. Being in a fenced in backyard made this an easier decision. It's not like anyone could really see her, save for her brother or the little old lady who could certainly be watching them work from a window. But so what if someone caught her? There were no clothing police. Nothing bad was going to happen. And so she popped the shirt off her head and felt a weight lift from her shoulders, suddenly feeling freer. But she had to do something with her top.
