The traffic slowly got up to speed and I had to concentrate for a while. When I finally got around to looking across at Ellie, she was fast asleep. My load was twenty tonnes of floor tiles which was going to a warehouse in the next town. Before we got there, I pulled into a lay-by and woke Ellie up. "The place I'm going to doesn't allow children into their yard, so I want you to get up on the bunk, snuggle down in my sleeping bag and hide so they don't see you.

She took her shoes off and did as she was told. After I checked in at the gate and backed onto a loading dock she popped her head out. "I'm thirsty," she said. I closed the side curtains and gave her some water.

She wanted to know how long we'd be there and just as she spoke I felt the trailer bounce as I started to unload the twenty-six pallets of tiles. "Not long," I said, still wondering what on earth I was going to do with her. My phone rang, and it was the boss, giving me a collection some distance away, which meant staying out for another night.

Dinner was a spaghetti bolognaise which I heated up on my little stove. I had a can of beer and Ellie had to make do with water, but at least it was cold, having been stored in the cold box. After I wiped the plates clean and put everything away, I fired up the laptop, but we couldn't find a film that we both wanted to watch.

Ellie wanted to know more about me, so I told her that I was thirty-five, divorced with no children and currently living in a caravan, and no, I didn't have a girlfriend. She told me she was eight years old, that mummy and daddy had got divorced when she was little and mummy had lots of boyfriends. Her half sister, Jane, the baby in the car, was just over a year old.

"So who else have you been playing sexy games with," I asked.

"It started last year," she said. "Mummy has this boyfriend is quite a lot older and quite rich. When she had men stay the night, I got curious and sneaked in to see what they were doing. I didn't know anything about sex, but I could see that men's willies got big and stiff, especially when mummy sucked them. After that, I saw how they poked them into mummy's winkle and how much she seemed to like doing it."

"So how did you get involved?"

"I got caught peeking," she giggled. "There was this man who was really nice. He was younger than mummy I think and if I was still up when he came to the house he used to talk to me properly, like you are not like when grown-ups talk to babies. He always told me how pretty I was and sometimes bought me little presents. One evening, they started kissing and cuddling and I sent to bed as usual. They went into mummy's bedroom and I waited for a while before tiptoeing down the passage to peep through the door."

"So you saw them having sex?"
