Valen is Yuu' childhood friend and one of the three founding members of his harem.

Personality

Valen could be described as an American style otaku; she loves anime, enjoys going to conventions, and is known to cosplay from time to time, but knows where to draw the line between that and her other hobbies. Her favorite series of all time is Sailor Moon. She also likes to keep a collection of asian ball-jointed dolls.

Of all the girls in Yuu' harem, Valen is usually the most reluctant to go through with Minako's or anyone else's plans, and the only one who has ever gotten mad at Yuu for sleeping with someone new (granted, so far it's only been once, after the first week of school). This basically stems from the fact that she's the only one who didn't initially start her relationship with him knowing that she was going to be sharing.

History

Valen was adopted by her parents when she was a week old. A couple years later, her parents adopted a younger brother for her. She met Yuu when her family moved into a nearby home when they were 4, and quickly became nearly inseparable friends, as well as with Faye and Minako. Like many young girls, she liked to play house, and like many similar boys, Yuu played along since it's what his friend wanted to do. After a couple of years of this is when she managed goad Yuu into promising to marry her someday. Being 6, Yuu of course thought nothing of it at the time.

Yuu introduced her to video games right about the time Valen grew out of playing house. While she never got into it as much as Yuu, she did develop a soft spot for JRPGs, and spent plenty of time at his house playing them. Her own parents, while they didn't disapprove, tended to think of it as frivolous and never bought her any games.

After they both hit puberty, each of them developed a crush on the other. They initially didn't do anything about it, however. Yuu because of a crippling shyness along with the mistaken assumption that his feelings weren't mutual, as well as a tendency to develop a new crush every other week and hold these multiple crushes simultaneously; Valen because she kept waiting for Yuu to make the first move. Finally, she got tired of waiting, and confronted Yuu on the first Friday of their summer vacation after finishing the 10th grade. She demanded to know if Yuu was going to fulfill his promise, which he had forgotten entirely about. After thinking about it for a few minutes, he was forced to conclude that he felt the same way, and they became a couple, spending the night together.

A week later, Faye and Minako, two of her best friends, approached Valen, begging her to share. She wrestled with it in her mind, but ultimately couldn't bring herself to leave the two of them heartbroken, especially after considering how hard it must have been for them to approach her about it, given their relationship to Yuu.

Character Conception

This character is actually one of the hardest for me to write because unlike every other character in this story, Valen is a collaborative work between my wife and I. That's the primary reason that she has the role of Yuu' childhood friend, as well as was his very first girlfriend, even if she only got him to herself for about a week. Valen's appearance is entirely my wife's doing; when I wanted to get profile images of all the characters, I started up the character creator in Artificial Academy 2 and asked her to make Valen.

There's one secret thing that makes Valen unique amongst all the girls; something that she doesn't even know herself. But I won't spell it out right now because it gives away huge chunks of the plot.

I originally asked my wife to decide on Valen's last name. When she still hadn't suggested anything after a month, and I found out that Lichtenfeldt is a real name that people have, I announced that I was going to make that Valen's last name, and if she had any objections she could suggest something different. My wife hates the name; but has yet to make any suggestions.
