Introduction

A short parody that really has nothing to do with the story but will serve as an introduction.

As a side interest, I research classical literature, compile footnotes and reference notation for university study. It's a kind of quick lesson so you don't have to actually read Chaucer, or heaven forbid, such mental giants as Tolstoy, to get insight into their writings. A kind of a cheat, but not frowned upon by the noble professors. Unfortunately, I have to read all of the works and even attempt to understand them.

I guess we all have our favourite menaces, and my all time was Dostoevsky. Don't misunderstand me, the man was a genius, and composed some of the most noble literature to ever be penned. But you must read the works in the native language in order to appreciate it and glean the little reclusive artifices and allusions. The translation was good, but something was definitely lost.

Through a series of requests, I was able to locate what was purported to be a volume of the original translator's notes. So, rather than spend years learning the language, I opted to borrow a copy of the reference tome, which was unique and the only one known to exist.

When the happy day arrived and the volume was delivered to the university library, I cleared my blotter in order to spend at least a week wrestling with it, inside the bowels of the building and in those secret dustless rooms where such endeavors take place. Within the great ledger, were dozens of sheets of handwritten copy that evidently did not belong there. I knew this because I read them. Since I couldn't remove them, I opted to make photocopies, in order to preserve them, and pass them along to those who may enjoy such literature. Following is my detailed transcription:
