Biography

Mina grew up in fear of her father. From a very young age she was aware of how violent he was, and both her and her mother tried very hard to please him in order to appease his anger. While he seldom hit Mina, she learned from a young age how to lie about bruises and wore enough clothing to cover them.

For a bit things appeared to improve when her mother got pregnant and her little sister was born. The little girl appeared to be the only thing capable of giving his father a smile, and she began to hope things would improve.

Then, one night, when Mina was 10, she awoke to her father screaming at her mother and the knowing noises of him hitting her. She covered her 2-year-old sister’s ears, trying to protect her from that, but unlike other nights, where her father tired and went out, leaving her mom crying, the noise stopped suddenly, and her father entered the room white as a sheet. Mina was afraid he would hit her sister, so she covered her with her body and waited. When nothing happened she got up, finding his father gone, and his mom lying still on their bed.

She’s not sure what happened after that, but found herself and her sister in their grandparent’s house, had to tell what little she saw too many times to too many angry policemen, and was finally left alone to cry herself to sleep, refusing to let go of her baby sister.

Since then she’s felt empty inside. She knows she should be sad both her parents are death, but she feels relieved she no longer has to lie in her bed in fear of the noises that would mark another beating. She feel guilty for not missing her mother that much, and wonders if there is something wrong inside her.

Her mother was killed the same year she took the sex-ed class. Mina was quick to catch that what her father did to her mother looked a lot like sex, and after she was killed she formed a link between the violence of his father and the act, wishing never to experience it, and really fearing it.
