You are just beginning to think about your appearance. You are short for our age and a bit fat, especially your bottom which seems to stick out more than the other girls in your class (except for Susan). Your hair is long and dark like Mummy's and she usually plaits it for you. Brown eyes and a snub nose are on an unremarkable face, and on your chest there are just the hint of the breasts to come.

"Hi Gramps," you say as you let yourself in to his house. As usual, he's watching TV - it seems that he doesn't do much else these days, ever since Gran died. The house is clean and tidy, because his cleaning lady has been today, and there's a cake on the kitchen table. You cut two slices and take them into the sitting room.

"Thanks," he says, without even looking at you.

You try to cheer him up with a funny story about how Mr William the maths teacher tripped over and fell in a muddy puddle, but he doesn't even smile. You give up and go into the kitchen to do your homework. It's easy stuff - just writing the correct word in the blank spaces, so it only takes a few minutes.

You stand in the doorway looking at Gramps. In the last few months he has lost weight and looks older than his sixty-something. He used to be quite active and would kick a ball around on the lawn, or play board games. But now he just sits there, staring at whatever's on the TV.

"Would you like to play a game," you ask. He looks at you and shakes his head.

Back in the kitchen, you read for a bit and then sit with your chin in your hands pondering how to cheer the old man up.

When daddy gets stressed out, you know what is guaranteed to make him happy, but he told you that it was strictly between you and you should NEVER tell anyone else. Maybe, you think. Maybe the same thing would cheer Gramps up.
