You look down at her messy hair and her dirty face; her grubby jacket and dirty old sneakers. "I'm saying that a shower would make you feel a lot better," you say, diplomatically. There's something about this girl that intrigues you.
She shrugs and blanks you. "I'll throw in a fry-up, you say."
She takes a deep breath. "No funny business," she says as she uncoils herself and gets to her feet with all the unconscious grace of the young. "Lead on McDuff..."
"Oh! a classics scholar," you say as you walk off down the path towards your apartment. She doesn't reply but you can hear her sneakers on the gravel behind you.
Inside your apartment, she prowls around without a word, looking at everything; she opens the bedroom door, but doesn't go in, and then the bathroom. "Ill start cooking," you say; "help yourself to the facilities, towels are in the cupboard." You smile as you hear the snick of the lock, and head into the kitchen.
