We found a table for four and Bob sat opposite me with Molly on my right and Harry opposite her. As far as the food went, the meal was entirely unmemorable; my salad was okay, but Bob's steak was almost inedible; the children did better with fish fingers and chips. There was a long break between courses and children were wandering about the crowded dining room; somewhere, a baby was crying and we all wished that someone would take it away.

While we were waiting for pudding, both children got up and went for a wander around, and when they came back Harry climbed up on his father's lap and demanded a sip of his wine. Molly disappeared under the table and I wondered what she was up to; I soon found out when I felt her hands on my knees pushing them apart. I looked across at Bob and was somewhat surprised when he winked at me over the head of his six-year-old son. “The children seem to have taken a shine to you,” he said.

I smiled, trying to keep things nonchalant as a small hand began to explore the bulge in the front of my trousers. “I don’t have any myself, but I have some nephews and nieces that I seem to get on with pretty well.”
