Father Brown enrolled you at the local school and then took you out and bought you some uniform and some vests and pants. At school, they make fun of your accent at first and call you things like "carrot cruncher", but you don't really mind and it doesn't take long before you're talking pretty much like them and doing well with your classwork too. Spreading your legs six nights a week (he doesn't do Sundays) for the priest is no big deal and things settle down into a fairly pleasant routine.

One day he tells you that he wants to take you shopping. This is quite a surprise because apart from the short walk from the presbytery to school and back, you hardly ever go anywhere. "I've got some friends coming round and I would like to show my "niece" off," he says.

Instead of going to the big department store nearby, he takes you in a taxi to a different part of the city. You follow him down a narrow street and into a shop with a big sign on the door "NO ONE UNDER 18". "I'm only fourteen," you say.

"Don't worry, they know me here," he replies, taking your hand and leading you inside. Around the walls are mannequins with all kinds of sexy looking clothes on and you begin to feel a little alarmed. He leads you through to a back room which just has some plush chairs and a table. A woman comes out and greets him. "It's been a while since we saw you, Father Brown," she says. She looks you up and down, making you blush. "She's a bit skinny," she says. "I suppose this is the niece you were telling us about."

"I am having a few friends round for supper, and I thought it would be nice to dress Jane up as a waitress," Father Brown said and winks at the woman.

"I know exactly what you mean," she says and bustles off through the curtain at the back of the room. Father Brown sits next to you and puts a hand on your bare leg. "Just relax," he says, "the nice lady is going to bring you some pretty clothes to try on."

The woman comes back with an armful of clothes what's on the table. "Right let's have you undressed," she says. You sit there staring at her. "Come on girl, there's no need to be shy, I'm sure you haven't got anything that Father Brown hasn't already seen," she says, pulling you to your feet.

You're wearing a plain white blouse and a pleated tartan skirt, and the woman impatiently starts undoing your buttons. "Is she a bit simple," she says to Father Brown.

He shakes his head. "No," he says. "She is actually quite bright. She just a little shy that's all." You let her finish the buttons and then you undo the waistband of your skirt, pull the zip down and let it fall to the floor. She tuts, picks it up and folds it neatly over the back of the chair.

You stand in the middle of the floor in your vest and pants and she holds up a strange-looking belt with ribbons and buckles hanging down from it. "Have you ever worn a suspender belt," she asks, and when you shake your head she smiles across at father Brown, before getting down onto her knees to wrap it around your waist. She shows you how to do up the hooks and eyes at the front and then slide it around so that the catches are behind you and the ribbons hanging down your legs. She pushes you back so that you have to sit on the table and then kneels down to pull your socks off.

The stockings are rather strange, like a fisherman's net, and she shows you how to roll them up before putting your foot in and then pulling them all the way up your leg and hooking them on to the dangling ribbons.

You feel a little bit silly, trussed up like a chicken, but Father Brown seems happy enough. You get dressed again and the woman takes the clothes, packs them into a parcel. You can see that apart from the stockings, there are some other clothes.

In the taxi on the way home, Father Brown explains about the party.
