You quite fancy John from the moment you see him and you guess that it is mutual. In spite of that, it was some weeks before he asks you out. "It's only a bunch of college friends," he says.

You feel a bit intimidated by his posh friends and drink rather too much vodka. One of them tries to get his hand up your skirt but John rescues you and you end up back at his flat, still rather worse for wear.

In the morning you wake up alone in a strange bed. It's a big bed and very comfortable and you are somewhat surprised to find that you are still wearing the 'sensible' underwear you had worn the night before. There is a man's dressing gown on a chair and you wrap yourself in it before going in search of a loo. "In there." John points from the kitchen where he seems to be cooking something. You follow the finger and find a palatial bathroom where you use the WC, rub some toothpaste on with a finger and rinse your face.

He has cooked the best sausages you have eaten since you left the farm, accompanied by two fresh eggs. "I'm sorry about last night," you say, meaning the way you crashed in his bed and passed out.

He shrugs. "Not quite the way I intended to get you into my bed," he says with a smile. You compliment him on the sausages. "They send them up from home," he says.

The next time he invites you out, it is to dinner at a posh restaurant. You blow the best part of a month's wages on a dress and by now you have learned how to cope with high heels. You are a little surprised by the obsequious waiters who fawn over you both and they keep topping your wine glass up so it's inevitable that you end up in his bed again. This time you are not passed out however, so you discover why his friends call him Donkey. He seems pretty surprised that you're not scared of it, and he confesses that several girls have run off when they saw it..

After a few sleepovers he asks you to move in with him, but he says that there are a few things you need to know about him. You've heard some of the people in Chambers calling him "Your Lordship", but you'd always assumed that it was a joke because of his posh accent. It turns out that he really is a Lord and not only that he's inherited a big house and an estate out in the country.

You get married in a Register Office with only a couple of people from Chambers as witnesses and you become "Lady Jane", for real. When you takes you to see the house, it's covered in scaffolding and the garden is a muddy mess. He tells you that when he inherited it, it wasn't fit to live in and he'd had to sell some overseas properties to pay for all the renovations.

By the time you move in, you're pregnant with Andrew and you happily give up work to become a full-time wife and mother. Four years later Jane comes along. Her birth was difficult and with John in Town all week, and busy with estate business at weekends, you more or less lose interest in sex.
