After break time, you begin your second History of Magic class. It looks as though you have a double History of Magic class every Tuesday morning, which means they will likely be exceedingly dull.
Taking control of the girl’s body, you decide to ignore the lesson completely. You already know everything they are teaching you, and that in and of itself is reassuring. If magical history in this timeline were significantly different from that of your own you would feel very lost indeed. You decide to spend some of this lesson looking through your text book at key moments in history to check that they are the same.
Lily is sat next to you, and she keeps trying to catch your eye. More than once you feel her hand on your arm, no doubt trying to comfort you or check that you are ok after your “nightmare hex” that you suffered. You flinch away from her, irritated at her compassion. Love is so weak, you think to yourself. Lily looks hurt, and returns to reading her book and listening to the Professor.
You check your textbook for notable events in history. Goblin rebellions seem to have occurred at the same point in time as in your own timeline, including the most recent, in 1890, led by Ranrok. The Unforgivable Curses were made unforgivable in 1717, just as they were in your timeline, and Gellert Grindelwalk was still defeated and imprisoned in Nurmengard Castle.
Satisfied that this world is in most ways similar to your own, you breathe a sigh of relief. What you need to know now is what may have happened differently in the 70s and 80s until now. Perusing a newspaper archive might be one way of finding this out, or finding a book about yourself perhaps, if anyone has been foolish enough to write one.
Relaxing, you relinquish control of the girl’s body.
Emily you think to yourself, but addressing the girl, I will rest now. You may do as you wish, and I will not be angry if you find my memories of magical history, but DO NOT PRY ANY DEEPER.
You relax, feeling the monster crawl back under his rock, to rest, or sleep, or whatever he does when he is not in control of you. You remembered your realisation that you had when riding your horse Felix, that although sometimes you are in control, and sometimes he is in control, there are also many times when neither of you is fully in control, and it’s not clear who is making decisions, speaking or acting.
Lily looks at you again, and this time you smile at her. Reaching out, you take hold of her hand under your desk, giving her a gentle reassuring squeeze. You are easily able to hold her left hand in your right, and continue writing with your left hand. This way you know you are in control, as the Monster is right handed.
Lily looks at you again, and you smile and wink at her. Reaching behind her, you pull her close for a sideways hug, but only briefly, so as not to attract too much attention.
You are so relieved that the Monster is allowing you to spend time with her like this. It’s the most important thing in the world right now.
