While this does not literally mean that the child almost died, they were beaten harshly and continuously, and the beating simply would not stop regardless of what the child said to their parent. The child, at least, was absolutely certain they were going to be beaten until they died. This does not have to have happened repeatedly, only once is enough in terms of the kind of trauma this would create for the child.
