Ok, the feeling you are getting off this guy is starting to bug you a little. You feel a little foolish for it, like you are probably imagining it, but you have got to say something anyway.

“What?” You turn around and ask, a little more confrontationally than you meant to. You are expecting him to jump in surprise that you are suddenly confronting him like this, that would just tell you how much of a fool you were being, and probably confirm for you that you are really going crazy. What he actually does though has the unnerving quality of remaining on that ambiguous line between your irrational thoughts could still just as easily be right as wrong. He just meets your eye contact and smiles very faintly.

“Did you need something?” He asks in a level tone in his deep voice, there is something about the way he says it that sounds almost like a parent who just had their child's attention directed at them. It is certainly not the reaction you were expecting, but it is one that you can interpret as you having been wrong in your irrational thoughts, so you decide you were just wrong and feel your cheeks and ears getting hot as you break eye-contact with the unnervingly calm middle-aged seeming man.

“Umm... nothing.” You whimper as you turn back to face the front of the line.

“Ok,” He responds, “but we will have to have a word after you hear what the registrar has to say.”

What the hell? “What do you mean?” You turn back around, now feeling very threatened. Is this some kind of challenge to a fight? All of a sudden, this guy's previously calm demeanor completely changes context. What seemed like a neutral reaction from him before now screams danger. Only somebody who is supremely confident in their ability to remain dominant in the situation can maintain the kind of calm this guy is showing, and it is sending signals to your primal brain that you do not want to fuck with this guy.

“It's all right,” he says, “I just thought you might hear something from the registrar you might not like, so I was going to talk about it after you were done.” What the hell? Does he know something? “It looks like you're next.” He says with a gesture of his hand. Your heart is thundering in your chest at this point.
