That's pretty game-like, not usually how confidence works in the real world. Taking some actions and gaining some success from them is what raises confidence. Other things like psyching yourself up and changing the kinds of language you use to describe yourself and your intentions can also give a temporary boost to your confidence, same for finding out you are more liked and better accepted than you originally thought. My thoughts were that seeing Savanah's positive reaction to what he was doing with her started developing his confidence, and then this change in language here in this encounter with his mother was the thing to solidify the transformation.
