Introduction
At heart, I’ve always been a collector. Usually just bits and bobs of odd pieces until I discovered the genre called folk art. It’s been around for centuries and every European country has their own brand and some of it was quite classical.
What intrigued me the most were the ‘Puss In Boots’ variety. The Germans had their ‘Der gestiefelte Kater’ and the Italians their ‘Il gatto con gli stivali’ and the French ‘Le Maître chat ou le Chat botté’. I found it quite intriguing that a number of the paintings were on wood backboards and meant for wall hangings but there were a surprising number that were ancient woodcut illustrations for fairy tale books.
The originals were very dear so I had to confine my purchases to reproductions and loved pouring over them for hours at a time. It’s interesting to consider that the character became the inspiration for writers, great musical composers, choreographers, then later screen play and cinema.
I was delighted to locate a collection of loose manuscripts offered by an individual who was willing to part with them for a mere pittance. They said they found it in their cottage after they acquired it and rather than toss it in the tip, find someone who could appreciate it; which was me.
It was exciting when the parcel arrived and I found along with the loose papers, this interesting story that I would like to share with you:
