The White Lotus leader and two other members were trekking through the snow in the middle of a blizzard. They were buffeted by the wind and were painfully pelted by tiny frozen droplets. They rounded the top of a hill and at last they saw the village. They headed straight for the home of a man called Tonraq. He claimed that his child was the next Avatar, a being of great power who could wield the four elements and communicate with the Spirit World and past Avatars. Tonraq was waiting for them and ushered all three inside where his wife was tidying the house. After a quick exchange of pleasantries, the young child in question burst into the room. She was very impressive, demonstrating her ability to manipulate the elements at such a young age. It was clear that she was quite brazen and rambunctious in her demeanor. Her name was Korra.

The White Lotus leader spoke to Tonraq and his wife Senna, telling both of them that the three White Lotus members needed some privacy in order to perform some rituals to test young Korra. Tonraq protested that he should be present, but Senna talked him down. She told the White Lotus members that she would take her husband to a neighbor's home, and urged them to take their time. Tonraq walked out of earshot as he prepared to leave.

"She can handle anything you do to her," Senna winked conspiratorially at the three strangers.

The White Lotus members were alarmed. Did the woman know the rituals that every potential Avatar they tested so far had to undergo?

"You don't need to be gentle," she whispered. "Maybe I'll even watch for a bit."

The frumpy female of the White Lotus group started to protest, "No, you can't watch...."

But Senna and Tonraq were already on their way out the door.

The White Lotus leader was a heavyset bearded man who was shorter than the female White Lotus member. The third of their group was a taller, thinner man, similarly bearded as the leader.

Little Korra stood in the middle of the room, gazing defiantly at the examiners.

"Now," the leader said, "We are going to test you. Let me explain first then we can begin. First, we will test your combat proficiency. Then we will test your communication skills. After that, your tolerance to adversity. At the end of the test, we will impart our wisdom into you. Then we will decide whether you are worthy of becoming the Avatar."

"Whatchu mean?" Korra asked quizzically.

"I mean," the leader says patiently, "You will show us how you fight. Then you will show us how well you can talk. Then we will see what you act like when things don't go your way. By showing us how you fight, we can tell the potential you have for bending the elements. By showing us how well you can talk, we can see how you might talk to your people as Avatar, or even the spirits. And most of all, we need to see how you react when things are against you. If we train you, you will become very powerful. Having that power means that you also will bear a lot of responsibility. That just means that people need to be able to rely on you. Do you understand?"

"OK, so we fight now?"

"Haha, OK. We will get ready. The fights will be one-on-one. Since we're adults, we will take it easy on you," the leader explains jovially.

"I'm four! You don't need to take it easy on me. I can take on all of you with my bending!" she declares without a trace of fear.
