Ideas ran through Sally's head. She could sneak into the locker room at recess, steal a pair of very modest panties from somebody's locker, and then pretend to trip and fall while everyone is watching to prove that she does not in fact go to school with no underwear on. No, that would just get her labeled as the girl who is always getting her skirt flipped up--"Skirts Up Sally!" She could try to steal Tiffany's panties and engineer some way to show her naked butt off to the rest of the class. That is, if she could plan some way to make that happen. No, even if she could that would probably just get them both called "The Flasher Friends." Sally wasn't sure which part of that nickname would be worse. Her, being friends with Tiffany? Gross. They used to be, but that was a whole two years ago. Maybe if she were to act like her butt is totally awesome and that she is totally not ashamed of people seeing it they would not have anything to tease her about. No, then boys like that weird Allen kid would just ask her to let them look under her skirt, and she could not handle embarrassment like that again.

She asked herself, what should I do? She recalled her mom saying, 'Just ignore it when they tease you. If you don't give them the satisfaction, eventually they will get bored and forget all about it.' Mom had given her that advice after that fight with Tiffany in front of their friends on the playground. Sally realized that it had been kind of similar to what had happened earlier. Tiffany had been climbing on the monkey bars when Sally thought that it would be funny to jump up and grab her friend from the ground. She had succeeded at pulling Tiffany off the rung and on top of Sally on the dirt below. Sally had held onto her then-friend laughing, but Tiffany had gotten really red in the face and yanked herself out of Sally's grasp. The action pulled Tiffany's button-down shirt open revealing her bare chest. Tiffany pulled her shirt closed and shouted at Sally. Sally felt sorry and lifted her own t-shirt over her head to try to make Tiffany feel better, but that just made her more angry. Their friends noticed the argument and ran over. Tiffany accused Sally of being gross and disgusting, and the other kids agreed with Tiffany, throwing unkind names at her until she ran away. It was a sad memory, but Mom had been right. Apart from Tiffany, the other girls had gotten over it when she did not react to their teasing. They were not her friends again afterward, but they did not go out of their way to bother her either.

Sally decided that she would do the same thing this time. She would pretend like what happened didn't matter until everyone got bored with laughing about it. Judging by her reaction earlier, Tiffany would still hold a grudge for some reason--like she was the one who got embarrassed!--but everyone else would get over it quickly enough. Hopefully they would not come up with any unflattering nicknames for her before that happened. Sally lifted her face out of the protection of her hands and sat up straight trying her best to look like this was just another day in class.

Mr. Vice had been lecturing about fractions while Sally was ruminating, and she had only just realized that she had spaced out for most of the class when she heard him say, "You may clean the whiteboard now, Miss Sorenson." Numbers and lines in various colors had been drawn with seemingly little regard to the figures that had earlier been drawn a few inches away. Sally thought for just a moment about how it might be dangerous to stretch up and wipe the board with her skirt missing a button and her bum bare beneath it, but she screwed up her courage and stood up. She could hold the waist of her skirt with one hand while she wiped the whiteboard clean with an eraser in her other hand.

Quiet whispers rose as she walked to the front of the classroom, hand gripping her skirt by the waist, and plucked the erase from the rail beneath the whiteboard. Sally pointedly ignored the whispers. With one hand she wiped the board clean as high as she could reach, but the top third of the board, which was covered in Mr. Vice's scribblings, was beyond her reach.

Mr. Vice broke off his lecture as he noticed Sally struggling. "You can stand on the chair," he said before pulling his leather office chair out from under his desk. Sally looked twice at the proffered chair, concerned over the possibility of losing her balance and flipping up her skirt again while standing so much higher than everyone else. Mr. Vice read the dilemma on her face, "Don't worry, I will hold the chair for you."

Sally flashed a grateful smile back at him. Mr. Vice, she thought, really is the best. Sally climbed onto the squeaky leather seat of the office chair and braced herself, feet wide apart for balance, while Mr. Vice took a firm grip of the back of the chair. Sally rubbed circles over the top of the whiteboard with the eraser while Mr. Vice delivered the last minutes of his lecture. He moved around a lot, reaching and picking up things on and around his desk. When one side of the board was clean, he wheeled Sally to the other side.

Mr. Vice was announcing tonight's math homework when Sally finished her task. She used her free hand to hold down the back of her skirt as she hopped down from the chair. Her action surprised Mr. Vice some, and he reached for the chair with his other hand but not before Sally noticed something in the middle of the seat. "Don't lose your phone, Mr. Vice," Sally said as she snatched the camera phone from the chair and handed it to him, feeling very helpful.

He blinked at her before saying a breathless, "Thank you, Miss Sorenson." Looking up at the class he announced in a louder voice, "Class dismissed. Be back in half an hour for today's English lesson." A low roar of excitement grew from the assembled children.

Sally took the blush on his face to be embarrassment at having almost lost something so important. "You said chapter seven for math tonight, right?" Mr. Vice nodded in response, and Sally joined the throng of students on their way out of the classroom. How does Sally want to spend her recess?

Sally tries to find a quiet place in the library to avoid her classmates.

Sally decides to put on a brave face and joins her friends on the playground.
