"Miss. Kittie Eckles was just sent in to see you sir, it seems she arrived late for her class today." Ms. Varano's voice comes in over the intercom.

You look up to the clock and note it is 20 minutes after classes were supposed to start. However, even for a short tardiness like this it is considered a middle infraction.

"Send her in." You tell your secretary.

The door clicks open, and the girl with short brunet hair walks in wearing a sweater that looks 2 sizes too big on her. She looks up at you, but then quickly averts her gaze and timidly takes a seat.

"So, you are Miss. Eckles, right?"

"Y-yeah!" She responds, nervous and looking like she's about to jump out of her seat.

"What grade are you in?"

"F-fifth grade sir."

"So, you were late getting to school. Do you mind telling me why you decided to come in so late?"

"I-I'm sorry sir!" She says in a defensive tone, "It was all my sister's fault! She was supposed to take me to school, but then she took me to her boyfriend's house instead and then kicked me out of the car and told me to walk! She said she was going to give him a ride and I had to walk!"

"Hmmm..." You let out an involuntary thoughtful sound upon hearing this. That's definitely interesting, and there is no doubt at all it fits right into the criteria of this new punishment the Decon proposed.

"It's really not my fault!" She pleads.

Yes, if what she says is true then it really isn't her fault. However, while there is not officially a "no exceptions" clause in the guidelines, the way punishments have been handled so far and the mood of those standing above you has pretty much made that an implicit part of the program. You had best at least give her something.

But first, some more information.

"And your sister is...?" You ask her.

"Huh?" She responds in confusion.

"I'm asking who your sister is."

"Oh, umm... her name is Alycia."

"[[Alycia Eckles then, huh?" You respond. "Well, Miss Eckles, your sister is going to definitely be punished very very badly for what she did with you today. However, the rules are the rules. You are also going to have to get a punishment."

"What!? But..."

"I'm sorry," you cut her off. "That's just how it is. I can't start making exceptions. The fact is, you broke the rules. I know it wasn't your fault, but if I don't punish you then everyone will think they can just get away with breaking the rules too."

"But it's not fair!"

"Well, that's the way it is." You repeat. "I can make your punishment light due to the circumstances, but I am afraid I cannot eliminate it completely. However, I'm not even going to be able to give you a light punishment if you keep arguing with me. That will be disrespect for a school official, and you really will be in trouble for that one."

"Mmm..." She has a whine of a moan in response to your argument. "But..." She looks like she is on the verge of tears.

Decide on a light punishment and re-assure her before she can dig her own grave

Goad her into arguing so you can take full advantage of this girl and her situation
