Kiritsugu was a former underworld assassin specializing in targets who were mages. He would typically use conventional non-magical means to eliminate his targets despite the fact that he was a mage himself, once even blowing up an entire sky scraper building with plastic explosives in order to kill one mage. His powerful time dilation magic puts a great strain on his body, so he only uses it in cases where things go very wrong in his assassination attempt. Despite this rather shady background, he views himself as someone who is fighting for justice, often choosing targets who conduct magical experiments that threaten both the human and mage world alike.
10 years ago, Kiritsugu was hired by the Einzbern family to participate in the Holy Grail War as their representative. As the entire point of the mock war is to kill other mages, they figured hiring someone who literally did this professionally would make for an excellent candidate for this purpose. During the preparation leading up to the Holy Grail War, he began to get really close to Irisviel, the vessel for the Grail in this ritual. They became close and Irisviel became pregnant and gave birth. In retribution for this, the Einzberns made their daughter, Illiasviel, into another vessel for the grail should he fail to get the grail this time around.
Kiritsugu's actions are the key difference between the universes of Fate/Kaleid and Fate/Stay Night for those of you only familiar with one of the two universes. In both universes, Kiritsugu's intention is to disrupt the ritual at the last minute in order to save Irisviel. In the world of Fate/Stay Night, he fails do do this, obtains the grail after Irisviel is sacrificed, and then destroys the grail. In the world of Fate/Kaleid, he successfully stops the ritual before Irisviel can be sacrificed, then goes on to destroy the Einzbern family in the process of getting their daughter back from them.
