Epilogue

Essentially, that was the way the rest of the summer went and I remained true to my little love and only partook in ‘approved’ conduct with her friends. I took her love and devotion for granted and was a fool to believe it would never end. The very next spring, after my love had turned ten, she approached me at our usual rendezvous; the rock by the pond. Her eyes were swollen red from crying and she fell on me, held me tight and buried her face in my shoulder.

I held and tried to soothe and comfort her but she was too distressed to talk and I had to let her calm, so she could tell me the matter, which didn’t come easy. I dabbed the tears from her eyes, patted her back and rubbed it but the sobs kept on coming along with the tears. I had never felt so helpless in my life as I did then. After what must have been an hour, she finally calmed down enough that I could help her to my house and do a pot of tea. While we sipped our tea and nibbled on cakes, she was finally able to explain what had transpired.

Her mum was on a short lease because their house had sold and they had thirty days to move. My heart sank to the floor when I heard that; it totally devastated me. My first thought was there was possibly something I could do to prevent or at least forestall the inevitable. I had met and spoken with her mum casually and had a feel for the kind of person she was, a woman of pride, and wondered if she would accept what I could offer.

Initially, I considered hiring her to keep my place and allow her and her family to live with me, I had plenty of room, but it would not be possible to hide my love for her daughter. Sure, her sisters covered for us, but she still didn’t know who bought groceries now and then as they were needed. Most probably, she would not have accepted them if she knew.

I also considered locating the new owner of their cottage and place a nice offer so I could buy the house for them. She probably would not have accepted that either, which I could appreciate. So, the days ticked off and my love and I tried to make every second count when we were together. Eventually, came word that her aunt would let them live with her, but it was in a city, half the country away from here.

Stealthily, I hired the removers as an anonymous donor that couldn’t be traced back to me. It turned out to be a godsend for them, because the money just wasn’t there. Then, on the last day, I stuffed a pack with a big wedge of cash, the camera with extra cards, and several more items I figured they would need. But, Lacey wouldn’t leave me and threatened to let her family leave without her. It took a lot to convince her of the repercussions involved and she reluctantly agreed to go with them. I walked with her as far as I could, and then followed her with my eyes. Then, I maintained a vigil until the removers left and a taxi took them to the rail station.

It was the saddest day of my life, possibly sadder than when my wife passed. I wasn’t much into drink except the occasional beer or two, but I quickly embraced the bottle. Unfortunately, it only helped me forget for a short time. Misses Keller was concerned with the number of times she found me asleep in my chair or on the sofa and I briefly, without much detail, explained my loss. In a way, she sympathized with me. Possibly not so much if she knew my love was only ten years old. I visited the park a few times and watched the girls that frequented there from a distance, but even that brought memories I couldn’t resolve. So, I decided to move, put some distance between me and my old haunts and try a fresh start. New home, new environment, maybe I could pick up the pieces, put my life in order and reach some sort of resolve.
