Generations/Head out of the forest

From All The Fallen Stories

The slope is steep. So steep, in fact, that you can't walk down it in a controlled manner. A branch snaps under your foot, and all you can do to keep from falling is to pick up the pace and run. Your legs flail about as your arms reach out to grab onto something - all while you desperately try to avoid crashing into any of the oncoming trees. Your thighs burn with the explosive effort. If you fall, it's all over.

Then, suddenly, the slope turns into flatland - and all the trees vanish. You slow your running down to a jog, then finally a standstill. In front of you is a wheat field - but not like that of your host's birthland. It's golden in the last rays of sunlight, and abundant with good growth. Behind you the forest looms quiet and mysteriously, but you've made it out at last. At a first glance there seems to be only fields, but then you see the church tower and thatched roofs of buildings clustered about a crossroads. It's a poor excuse for a city, and yet too urban to be a village. If memory serves, and judging from the direction you've journeyed. It has to be the town of Shaw's Creek.

There are no cottages nearby. Indeed, there probably aren't any farms within walking distance for miles. Shaw's Creek is nothing more than a gathering point for serfs to drop their crops once a month. It makes it easier for the Baron's men to gather. But not your Baron. This is the County of Willowwood. While you are scheduled for death in Verdrake, nobody knows you here.

The sun sets over the horizon, blending the sky a fierce purple and orange. Your host body gnaws with hunger, and the prospect of sleeping under a roof is alluring. Without wasting time, you begin to walk.

When you finally get to the town, night has fallen. The dirt streets and cobblestone huts shine blue in the moonlight, and save for the wind whistling past a few chimneys, it is quiet. Most of the town is asleep, but fortunately - there is a roundhouse in the center of town that still has light from the doorway. Not exactly a tavern, but a hostel for errands passing by. A woman dressed in Gugel and a filthy robe can be seen outside of it, loading sacks onto an ox cart.
