Multiverse theory

Multiverse theory is a bit of a different creature from multi-dimensional theory. Multiverse theory is the theory a lot of people likely think of when they hear terms like "higher dimension" or "alternate dimension." When people use terms like this, it is actually a completely inaccurate use of terminology.

Multiverse theory is the theory of parallel worlds existing. There are 4 different types of parallel worlds in multiverse theory.

Type 1: A type 1 parallel world is actually something of a boring concept. It is simply a different planet in the same 3 dimensional universe. What qualifies this planet as a parallel world rather than just another planet is that by the merical of statistics, this other planet just so happens to have all the exact same geological features as another planet (typically earth in this theory,) and also has evolved the exact same species of animals (including humans,) and its culture has developed exactly the same as well. Not only that, but it has bred identical people with identical names and living identical lives to the other planet.

This may all sound ludicrously far-fetched, but according to the law of statistical probability witch states that if the universe is infinite and has infinite planets going through an infinite set of conditions, then it is actually a statistical certainty that far more than just 2 of these infinite planets will come out exactly the same in every detail.

Type 2: Type 2 parallel worlds are the type that are most important to this RP. A type 2 parallel world is what one is generally talking about when one uses the inaccurate term "alternate/parallel dimension." (The accurate term would be alternate/parallel plane of existence.) In the case of a 3D world, a type 2 parallel world would be another 3D world with a different 4th dimension coordinate.

In this case, just like how one could conceivably travel from one earth to another if they had a fast enough space-ship for a type 1 parallel world, one can also travel from one type 2 parallel world to another if you are capable of 4th dimensional travel. (this is where multi-dimensional theory comes into the mix.)

Type 3: A type 3 parallel world is another popular interpretation of multiverse theory. In this theory, if there was ever a time in the past where two or more mutually exclusive things could have happened (such as the branching paths for the interactive stories on this site) then each of those possibilities triggers a parallel universe to come into existence, each of them representing a different one of those possible choices being taken.

The best way to visualize this really would be to think about any of the interactive stories on this site, those are pretty good examples of what a type 3 parallel world would look like. An alternate version of the type 3 parallel world theory is related to time travel and states that an alternate type 3 world only comes to exist when someone time-travels and changes the past.

Type 4: I (the author) do not actually understand the concept behind a type 4 parallel world, and thus cannot explain it to you. This section may be edited once I brush up on my research a little.

String Theory

String theory is something of a catch-all in the theoretical physics world. At its practical level, it is actually based on some pretty real and solid science at the levels below the sub-atomic level. I (the author) do not fully understand the science here, but I will do my best to describe the basic principals that they get to at their end-point in their research. This might sound a little... odd, but this is mostly because there is a lack of highly technical information in the mix.

String theory describes the existence of incredibly small circular strings, and these strings vibrate and in doing so they create quarks. Quarks are the particles that are 1 level below the sub-atomic. Photons and electrons are in the same size category as quarks. In fact, it is being said now that photons and electrons were the first quarks discovered before they started really getting into the study. At this point, about 15 different quarks have been discovered, each having their own action on the physical world, and according to string-theory they are the product of these even smaller super-strings vibrating at one of 15 different frequencies.

I (the author) have absolutely no idea how we get from this to multiverse theory and multi-dimensional theory, but somehow it actually does. Somewhere within string-theory, they actually extrapolate it out to start numbering the levels of the dimensions, and this is supposed to be the thing that ties all the theories within theoretical physics together. In this extrapolation of string-theory, dimensions 1, 2, and 3 are the dimensions we are all familiar with in our 3D world. Dimension 4 is time. Dimension 5 is a place-holder dimension that represents the space that the first 4 dimensions can fold and curve within, (like was observed in Einstein's theory of universal gravitation.)

It goes on to also number dimensions 6 and 7 as the 2 dimensions (with 7 serving a similar role to 5 in its status as a space for the 6th dimension to fold within) in witch the type 3 parallel worlds are enabled. Dimensions 8 and 9 are supposed to represent different type 2 parallel worlds, and for some odd reason they state that the 10th dimension is where the super-strings exist.

There is also an alternate expansion on string-theory called M theory, where M stands for "Membrane." Membrane theory states that an 11th dimension exists, and the 11th dimension is a giant membrane, like the membrane of a cell or the surface of a soap-bubble, and this membrane is actually made out of the lower 10 dimensions stuck together. This theory was actually created to explain "the big bang," stating that the big bang that created our (as well as all the others) universe was created by this membrane folding and two parts of the membrane colliding together.

For the sake of my (the author's) opinion, I follow the quarks stuff, and I follow the higher dimension stuff up until dimension 5, but once they get to dimensions 6 through 11 it all sounds a little fantasy land to me. I might be missing something, but I just don't buy it.
