"Mommmmmmeeee!" A high-pitched, innocent cry rang through the pristine hallway of St Margaret's Preparatory School. It echoed through every corridor, reaching the Principal's office in no time. The sound seemed urgent yet enticing, piquing the interest of all within hearing range. Principal Smith glanced at his watch, irritation evident in his voice, "Sister Agnes, what now?"
In response came the panicked screams again, "Misssssmiiiiiissssster Ssmithmmmmmiiiii!"
The tall figure of Sister Agnes rushed into the office, breath heaving. Her eyes wide with fear, tears streaming down her wrinkled face. "Oh, oh, miss...the twins! They…they..oh, it just happened so suddenly!"
Principal Smith rose slowly, towering over the small nun like a giant oak tree, "Calm down, calm down," he tried placating her, taking the quivering hand in his powerful grasp. "What have those little devils done now? Lost an eye this time?" His words dripped with sarcasm, but there was genuine concern beneath the facade.
He strode out, towards the scene of chaos that was classroom 1B. There stood two identical, delicate cherubs, dressed immaculately in their uniforms - but unbearably alike in almost everything else. The twin girls: Mary and Sarah, aged eight years old, both had blood pooling steadily underneath the flawless pressed skirts, and matching red splashes spotting their pristine white blouses.
They looked at him innocently, blue eyes beseeching with wide-eyed innocence. "Hello, sir," they sang in harmony, each holding a mangled finger in their respective palms, blood staining their white gloves crimson.
"Girls, what is the meaning of this mess?" He demanded sternly, disgust written plainly on his stern face.
A soft, melodious laughter erupted from them, causing several teachers to recoil in horror.
"Tweazzer broke," Sarah chimed in perfect harmony with her twin sister, holding up the broken clippers as evidence. Their voices lighter, sweeter than birdsong.
The room fell into dead silence before a cough escaped the Principal's throat.
"Explain," he rasped slowly, struggling to contain his growing rage.
The girls bowed their heads demurely. "We were playing a game, sir," began Mary timidly, her eyes never leaving her stained digits. "The aim was to see who could cut off the others' fingers first."
"Yes, sir," echoed Sarah sweetly, lifting up her own severed appendix for inspection.
His mind reeled trying to comprehend this macabre version of 'ring-a-rosie'. "And who won?" His tone was dangerously flat, hiding the turmoil brewing within.
They both spoke in synchronicity once more, "I did" they sang together.
Their voices chilled him to the core, chasing any trace of warmth left in his heart.
