“I don’t know,” you respond to her question, “but Billie, it was NOT right for him to do that, do you understand?” You use a heavy and serious tone as you try to drive in this point. You know that she probably grew up with this happening to her and likely thinks it’s natural considering how attached to her dad she still was. “Nobody hits their kids like that,” you tell her, “your dad did something that got everyone here who saw it very upset.”

You back off in order to look Billie in the eyes while you are saying this. As you tell her these things, you can see her pupils dilate as she takes you in like some tiger who is about to eat her. Driving this message in that heavy seems to have shocked and scared her. If this really is news to her, then it probably hasn’t fully sunk in yet. However, you know that you can’t just leave it at that and still have to chase it down more.

“You said before that your dad does this sort of thing a lot, right?” Actually, she didn’t say anything. It was you who said that, she didn’t even give you an affirmation. Rather, it was more a lack of her protesting that simply told you you were right. However, giving her more agency raises the likelihood she will say something now in this situation.

“Uh-ummm…” She responds, “well, not like that, but…” Her eyes start darting around, she’s definitely looking uncomfortable.

“But you’re saying he DOES hit you a lot, right?” You give her that hard stare again and she nods hesitantly. You’re glad for this, actually getting her to really admit it is very different for the psychological dam it breaks in her mind compared to you having figured it out. “Ok,” you say to her, bringing her back in for a gentle hug once again. “That’s good,” you say, “I know it’s scary to admit something like this, it’s Ok. I’m going to make sure he’s not going to hit you anymore, Ok?”

“Mmm…” You can feel her starting to tremble, her body constantly shaking and squirming in your grasp. “Ok, here,” you say, scooping her up to carry her in your arms again. “I’m going to take care of this, Ok? I’m going to take care of you. You’re not going to get hit anymore.” With those gentle words, you manage to spot Charity’s bright pink hair coming out of the girl’s bathroom.

“Uhh… hey.” She looks at you with a deep blush. "Can we talk?"

What will you do?
