Prologue

I did accounting for a small store chain until they showed me the door. A teensy little, but somewhat critical error, I made in the ledger forced an audit and I was dismissed for incompetence. The small severance I received wouldn’t carry me for long and my skills were not in very high demand nor did they pay well. The Jobseeker’s Allowance helped out some but about the only way I could get a position with another company, if they would even consider hiring me after the way I was dismissed, was for someone to die.

In the meanwhile, I managed to obtain a council flat on the second storey in a block flats. The tenants were mostly single mums with children that were so strapped they couldn’t afford to leave them with a childminder or child day centre, so they ran wild after classes and the duration of summer school holiday. I moved in during the May Bank Holiday and caught the immediate interest of the little scamps. The ones I encountered were girls in the seven to ten age bracket and there was only one ten year old boy in the lot.
