As Anakin runs up to the skiff, the ramp lowers and you run down to him and wrap your arms around him, relieved that he is safe and here to explain himself: but there is something different about him. You don’t know quite what it is.
“Padmé, I saw your ship.”
“Oh, Anakin!” you reply in utter love.
“It’s alright, you’re safe now. What are you doing out here?”
“I was so worried about you. Obi-Wan told me terrible things.”
Despite the horror of what you said though, Anakin did not seem as disturbed as he should be.
“Obi-Wan is trying to turn you against me.”
Why is he not as upset as you thought he would be? What’s going on with him? How did he so easily jump to that conclusion?
“He cares about us.”
“Us?!”
What’s going on with him? Why is he so angry? Perhaps it is best to explain.
“He knows . . . He wants to help you.”
“Is Obi-Wan going to protect you? He can't ... he can't help you. He's not strong enough.”
These things. What Anakin is saying... was Obi-Wan right after all?
“Anakin, all I want is your love.”
“Love alone won’t save you Padmé. Only my new powers can.”
So it is true. Anakin has joined the Dark Side. And he did it... for you? The weight of a sudden guilt now weighs down on you, as you suddenly start to wonder if you truly are responsible for all of this.
“At what cost? You’re a good person. Don’t do this.”
“I won't lose you the way I lost my mother! I've become more powerful than any Jedi has ever dreamed of and I've done it for you. To protect you.”
He really has done this all for you. These terrible things, betraying the Jedi and the Republic. All for you and your child. So many conflicting emotions running through your head. Anakin is no longer hiding that he has become a Sith. But despite all of that, he is still your husband. The father of your child. You can’t believe that he’s saying these things. But... maybe you can bring him back to the light?
“Come away with me. Help me raise our child. Leave everything else behind while we still can.”
“Don’t you see, we don’t have to run away anymore. I have brought peace to the Republic. I am more powerful than the Chancellor. I can overthrow him, and together you can I can rule the galaxy. Make things the way we want them to be.”
It’s almost too much to believe: your sweet, loving Ani is gone. He’s been corrupted by this dark; evil, hateful creature and you don’t know how to handle it.
“I don’t believe what I’m hearing...” But it’s true. Anakin has joined the dark side. “Obi-Wan was right. You’ve changed.”
As soon as you mention Obi-Wan, his face contorts into something evil. And it makes you tremble to your core. It makes you wonder how you could possibly oppose him.
I don’t want to hear anymore about Obi-Wan. The Jedi turned against me. Don’t you turn against me.”
The tears start to careen down your face. It hurts to see how much he has fallen and how evil he’s become. And yet, you can still see your husband in there. You wonder if maybe there is hope for him? Or even if he might be right?
