You often helped your Mum out at the nursery and you know Mary by sight. The mothers in Godwin's are all supposed to be over sixteen, but your Mum says that Mary is barely fifteen, not that much older than you. She is a pretty girl, with curly brown hair and a permanent tan that hints at a mixed-race couple somewhere in her ancestry.

She has the flat above yours and your dad claims that she only got it because the father of her baby is one of the councillors. On school days, she leaves the baby at Mum's nursery but now she has taken up some kind of martial art and wants a babysitter on Monday evenings.
