Love Potions

First published in 1952, this book is a third edition, published in the 1970s. You are pleased to learn that the book is banned from sale to under eighteen year olds, meaning no one at Hogwarts will be allowed to own a copy, and thus everyone will want to know what is inside.

You even find that there is a matching potion bottle that came with the book, and find it in your family library, gathering dust. You get Servus to polish it for you and keep it with the book. The bottle is unfortunately empty, but this doesn’t really matter.

The book and matching potion bottle look fantastic together

The first part of the book covers the history of Love Potions. You quickly grasp that the more powerful love potions, whilst causing intense passion and infatuation, are actually not that useful, unless you are set on simply seducing the object of your desire and then skipping town. The reason for this is that once such a powerful potion wears off, the person will realise what you have done and you may be in serious trouble. Using Obliviate to make them forget that they cheated on their husband with you, or that you tricked them into giving them your virginity will be no defence. Wiping someone’s memory may not be an unforgivable curse, but it is still a crime under some circumstances, and using a love potion to seduce someone before erasing their mind of the incident is a definite crime.

The next part of the book focuses on different types of Love Potion, all with various levels of intensity, duration, and effect. You learn that there are potions which increase platonic love and loyalty, in addition to those that heighten feelings of romantic love, or sexual desire. It is of course the latter that everyone focuses on. The book provides complete recipes for every type of potion described, from the weakest loyalty charm potions, to the strongest potions of romantic and sexual desire, including the legendary Amortentia. You are quite surprised at how straightforward and explicitly the instructions are written.

The interesting chapters are those on the correct use of Love Potions. For example, there are instructions on adding single drop of a weaker love potion to your desired one’s food, to make them very slowly fall in love with you. By use of a little actual charm and romance, you may then be able to seduce someone into a relationship whom you may have had little or no chance with otherwise. So long as you keep adding some love potion to their food, they may remain with you, and when their passion eventually fades, everyone will think it was just a failed romance, rather than a case of blatant magical enchantment. Sometimes the weaker but longer acting potions are more effective, the book argues.

The next interesting thing is the use of love potions between wizards and witches who are already lovers. In this case, the potion is used to enhance desire that is already there. The author writes about strengthening new love, renewing old love that has faded over time, or both drinking powerful Amortentia and having intensely passionate sex for several days. He also describes using the potion willingly, in cases of arranged marriage to produce pureblood children, but where sexual desire is lacking.

The book also describes the use of powerful love oils, that can be applied through massage, or dripped onto the lips or other body parts of one’s lover, to slowly increase passion and delight as lovers kiss and caress one another.

The book gets you quite aroused at the thought of what you could do with such potions.
